The presence of Dominic Toretto has been resolute in the Fast & Furious series, and it has been carried forward from the original movies to the reboot style of today. As the son of Jack Toretto and elder brother to Mia and Jakob, Dom has been responsible for his family since his father died, and he has accepted others in his surrogate family during his adventures.

Having first appeared in 2001’s The Fast and the Furious, Dom’s 20-year run onscreen has seen him develop as a character all the way to 2021’s F9. This includes his turn from being an anti-hero to a full-on leading protagonist, as well as a number of changes in his personality that have taken shape since his debut appearance.

10 He’s Willing To Show His Weak Moments

Although Dom has remained a man of few words throughout the Fast & Furious franchise, he originally kept himself this way in order to hide any lingering feelings of doubt and insecurity. In The Fast and the Furious, he kept Brian at arm’s length so as to hide this aspect, and it took until Fast & Furious 6 when he finally changed this up.

This was when he wanted to appeal to the amnesiac Letty and remind her of their love, and since then, Dom hasn’t held back in showing his “weakness.” In The Fate of the Furious, Dom displayed this the most when he realized he had a son and he seems to have realized that showing weakness doesn’t inherently make him weak.

9 He Doesn’t Want To Go Looking For Trouble Anymore

Dom was basically asking for trouble in The Fast and the Furious when he ran the illegal racket of stealing car parts even though he was painted out to be a protagonist. This continued until Fast Five, where he and his crew got enough money for it to never be an issue again.

After this, Dom has largely wanted to stay out of anything that can get him notoriety, with every installment since Fast & Furious 6 featuring characters like Mr. Nobody and Cipher forcing Dom to come out of requirement each time to take on personal missions.

8 His Rage Is Better Reserved

Dom was prone to jump into fits of rage in the first movie whenever he felt he was being done wrong by. This was one of the things his enemies targeted, as it had made Dom predictable. Starting from Fast Five, Dom has worked on keeping his anger in check.

This has enabled him to stay ahead of the antagonists in terms of planning, with Dom able to catch them by surprise due to their inability to read him. His rage has shown up in moments like Cipher threatening his son, but Dom has stopped getting angry over little matters.

7 His Fight Skills Have Massively Improved

Dom was never the guy who lost his fights, with every battle he’s been in either ending in his victory or a stalemate by his choosing. However, while he only had street punks threatening him back in The Fast and the Furious, Dom’s skills have vastly improved since as he’s taken on stronger foes.

Dom is now at the point where he can take down multiple, highly trained assassins at the same time and go toe-to-toe with the likes of Deckard Shaw, who was a black-ops soldier and mercenary. He also showed different brawling skills compared to the first movie in Fast Five when taking on Luke Hobbs, employing a mixture of defense and offense as opposed to just relying on the latter.

6 He Acknowledges His Mistakes

This was a very recent change in Dom’s character, as seen in F9 where he admitted he had wrongfully judged his brother. Dom was with the belief that Jakob had sabotaged their father’s car deliberately to kill him, but learned that this wasn’t the case and he had become estranged from John Cena’s Jakob based on his assumption.

In earlier movies, Dom always carried the belief that he was right, and justified this by finding out weaknesses in the other characters’ past. By F9, however, he acknowledged that he was wrong to think he knew everything about Jakob and reconciled with him afterward.

5 He’s Extended Those That He Considers To Be Family

In The Fast and the Furious, Dom had very few people he could truly rely on, even suspecting some members of his crew. It took him until Fast Five to increase his level of trust, as the heist in Rio made him realize he had a group he could count on.

Before that, Dom was even unwilling to fully trust Brian, only for their adventure in Fast Five to convince him that Brian was like his brother. By F9, Dom has extended the courtesy of someone being his family to Roman, Tej, Ramsey, Han, Hobbs, and even Deckard Shaw to an extent.

4 He Doesn’t Need To Prove Himself Anymore

Dom had an incredibly competitive streak in The Fast and the Furious, going so far as to put his own life at risk just to win races. This came down to his need to prove himself as the best, which has pretty much gone away in the following entries.

Where he wanted to beat Brian in their race in the original, Dom changed enough to let Brian win in Fast Five to make him happy. He’s also turned down personal challenges from villains by not taking their bait as he doesn’t feel he has to prove anything to them.

3 He Looks To Give People Second Chances

Dom was quite an unforgiving person in his first appearance, as he wanted to take down his enemy without caring for the consequences. The moment he changed was when Brian offered him a second chance when he allowed Dom to escape at the end of the movie.

Since then, Dom has looked to give the people he trusts the benefit of the doubt while voicing out his appreciation for Brian doing the same for him. It was due to this that Dom accepted Deckard Shaw’s turn into a protagonist — leading into Shaw’s spin-off movie — along with letting Jakob escape similar to how he had once done.

2 He’s Developed A Level Of Respect For Authority Figures

Dom was on the wrong side of the law until Fast & Furious 6, before which he was a criminal who didn’t care about the laws of society and openly mocked authority figures like Luke Hobbs. It was after the latter allowed Dom his freedom that he developed a respect for such people.

In his first appearance, Dom was prone to mock cops and didn’t think they were worth his time, but has since then developed friendships with the likes of Hobbs and Mr. Nobody while making sure to respect them for their own work.

1 He’s Made Peace With The Death Of His Father

It took Dom decades to reach this point, but F9 brought this long-awaited change in his character. For the longest time, he held onto the tragic memory of seeing his father die before his eyes and was never at peace with this fact.

After learning that their father had intentionally had his car sabotaged, Dom came to terms with the fact that his father’s demise was his own doing and decided to move on. Where Dom frequently mentioned his sadness of the loss of his father throughout the series, he’s changed himself to focus on the things he learned from him rather than fixate on his demise.
