To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII’s Japanese release on Jan. 31, 1997, developer Square Enix has unveiled two brand new anniversary logos.

Both logos feature the iconic Final Fantasy font but have a new key image in place of the falling Meteor seen in the original art for the game. This image focuses on the intertwined fates of the three SOLDIERS players are introduced to in Final Fantasy VII — Sephiroth, Zack and Cloud. The trio is all wrapped in Sephiroth’s single wing and rendered in simple black and white.

Final Fantasy VII told the story of Cloud Strife, a mercenary who claimed to be part of the elite SOLDIER program. As the plot unravels, the player learns that Cloud never made the cut to become part of SOLDIER and that his memories of missions with the legendary Sephiroth instead belong to Zack Fair. However, as Zack was killed before the game begins, it’s up to Cloud and his friends to stop Sephiroth from summoning Meteor to destroy the planet.

For fans of Final Fantasy VII, there have been several exciting releases from Square Enix in recent times. Final Fantasy VII Remake was released in April 2020 for the PlayStation 4 as part of a multi-game reimagining of the original title. Covering just the first section of the original game, Remake added in a variety of extra missions and side quests as well as changing the turn-based combat into a more real-time action style.

An updated version titled Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade was released for the PlayStation 5, complete with a visual overhaul for the next-gen console. Intergrade also included the exclusive DLC Episode INTERmission, which focused on Yuffie. Although only a bonus character in the original game that could easily be missed, INTERmission placed Yuffie in the thick of the action. Square Enix also recently released Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, a battle-royale style mobile game where players can create a character and play as a SOLDIER candidate against up to 75 other players.

Still to come is another mobile game titled Final Fantasy Ever Crisis. This game will cover the events of the Final Fantasy VII Compilation games Before Crisis, Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus in an episodic slimmed-down version similar to the mobile version of Final Fantasy XV. At the time of writing, there is no timescale for the release of Part 2 of Final Fantasy Remake, but development was said to have started in November 2019.
