Frank Grillo Casts Doubt On MCU Return As Captain America Villain Crossbones

Actor Frank Grillo has cast doubt that his villain Crossbones will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon. Grillo can currently be seen on the new season of Showtime’s Billions, where he plays Nico Tanner, a talented painter that catches the eye of Damian Lewis’ Bobby Axelrod. He also recently starred in the Netflix action film, Point Blank, and the police thriller Black and Blue. Although Grillo stated he was done playing Crossbones after his apparent death in Captain America: Civil War, the character made an appearance in Avengers: Endgame, crossing paths with Captain America once more under unique circumstances.

Brock Rumlow/Crossbones was created by Mark Gruenwold and Kieron Dwyer, first appearing in the Captain America comics in 1989. He is one of Cap’s most infamous foes, possessing considerable martial arts training, marksmanship, and is highly adept at hand-to-hand combat. The character first appeared in live-action form in Captain America: The Winter Solider, where it is revealed that Rumlow is working for the evil organization known as Hydra. Crossbones returned in the opening of Captain America: Civil War, where he faces off against Cap and his team, seemingly getting killed in the process. In Avengers: Endgame, the character appears when Captain America, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and Hulk travel back to 2012 in order to retrieve some of the Infinity Stones.

In an interview with Uproxx, Grillo cast some doubt over whether or not he would return as Crossbones. When asked if he would be pursuing any comic book properties in the future, such as a possible new Punisher project on Disney+, Grillo stated, “That’s not in my trajectory now. It’s not where my life is taking me anymore, and my friend Jonny Bernthal did an amazing job.” My life and what I want to do is much different now, and I think I’m outgrowing that whole kind-of Marvel and superhero thing.”

Though Crossbones appeared to die in his last altercation with Captain America, there are rumors swirling around that the character may make a return to the MCU. In fact, Grillo still has five more movies left on his Marvel contract, leaving the door open for the character to return to some way or another. Marvel is no stranger to bringing back villains in their films, the most notable being Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who has appeared in more than a handful of MCU films and will have his own series on Disney+. In fact, Red Skull, another Captain America villain, made his return in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame as the keeper of the Soul Stone on the planet Vormir.

Grillo’s Grossbones was heavily underutilized in the MCU. Grillo is not only a fantastic action star, but he can bring a visceral and palpable energy to a role when he needs to. Considering the character is one of Captain America’s more well-known enemies in the comics, it was disappointing to see him discarded so quickly after the opening of Captain America: Civil War. However, if Grillo is able to return as the character, perhaps more can be done with the villain in order to flesh him out a bit more. It’s disheartening to hear that Grillo has no plans to return to comic book films anytime soon. However, comic book fans can revisit his work as Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the meantime.
