Rachel Karen Green was introduced on Friends as the runaway bride set out to start over in life. It wasn’t easy to let go of her past relationships and the life she was used to, but with her passion and determination, she’d eventually take the world by storm.

In many ways, Rachel was a force to be reckoned with, a feminist icon, and a hero in every sense of the word. It so happens, though, that some fans have some unique or unpopular opinions about her and many of them have shared their thoughts on Reddit. Some say she has a slew of flaws, and others have unusual opinions about her romantic pursuits.

10 Rachel And Joey Would Have Been Great Together

In a thread asking for unpopular opinions about Friends, Reddit user Sassy_Severus_Snape says, “I think Joey and Rachel would have been great together.”

As hard as that may be to believe, turns out, there’s a minority who loved the controversial Joey and Rachel romance plotline. But it was a bad idea for their characters and a major turnoff for fans. Theirs was a relationship with no chemistry and they had nothing in common. Joey and Rachel’s romance was doomed from the start and many fans would say it was nothing more than an example of lazy writing on the show.

9 Rachel And Joey’s Should Have Just Been A Bit Of Fun & Nothing More

Rachel and Joey’s love arc is one of the most controversial plotlines of the show and some fans call it icky. Reddit user becauseindeed liked the idea of them hooking up, but not how the writers tried to make so much out of it. They said that the showmakers “made too big a deal out of it trying to make it into a relationship.” The Redditor went on to say, “It would have been really fun if they had just hooked up a couple of times and that was it.”

But this opinion is neither here nor there because, in the end, this storyline showed that friends hooking up can sometimes be a bad idea. One of the worst outcomes of this plotline was that it led to a wildly unstable group dynamic. Firstly, Rachel was confused about her feelings. Ross was never really comfortable with the idea of Joey becoming a stepfather to his and Rachel’s daughter. Joey was disappointed in himself after Ross found out. And so, many fans ask the question, was Joey and Rachel’s fling worth the pain it caused everyone?

8 Rachel Was Just As Jealous And Possessive Over Ross

Fans of the show are always criticizing Ross for his jealous and controlling behavior. But Reddit user likeneonlove believes the character should be cut some slack, saying, “Ross gets too much hate for his bad moments when the others could often be just as terrible. Besides Monica, they all have instances of cheating! Rachel was just as jealous and possessive over Ross.”

But even with the “we were on a break” argument aside, Ross deservedly gets hate for the things he did. It was horrible that he said the wrong name at the altar, and later in the show, lied to Rachel about getting an annulment. Conversely, when it comes to possessiveness, Rachel didn’t interfere in Ross’s work or obstruct him from attending work conferences with a colleague. She was supportive of his career and a trusting girlfriend.

7 Rachel Should Have Gone To Paris

Rachel got off the plane in the show’s finale episode, to the delight of Friends’ fans. But according to Reddit user Oley418, “Rachel should have gone to Paris! Ross had all the time in the world to decide he wanted to be with her and waited until she landed her dream job to act.”

One of the things fans eagerly anticipated as the show neared the end was for Ross and Rachel to get together. They were each other’s “lobsters” and had had a baby girl together who deserved to be brought up in a homely environment. The Redditor’s unpopular opinion is also biased towards Ross since Rachel was equally responsible for them getting back together at the end. Neither she nor Ross seized the day, but better late than never.

6 Rachel Lost All Her Glory When She Pursued Ross

Reddit user omniarnold says, “Rachel Green entered the scene as a terrific character; she was the audience surrogate!” They believe that everything changed though, adding, “… at the time when Rachel pursued Ross, she lost all her glory.”

This is an unpopular opinion since Rachel was the most dynamic character on Friends. She had many great story arcs on the show and romancing Ross was just one of them. She came back stronger after their breakup, in that she refused to be lovesick, looked out for herself more passionately, and great things happened in her professional life.

5 Rachel Is Selfish And Manipulative

While David Schwimmer’s Ross Geller is the show’s most polarizing character, there are those who offer an alternate take on the subject matter. Reddit user Crawlerer95 criticizes Rachel’s character saying, “She’s selfish, manipulative and seems as if she’s only out for herself.”

This is clearly an unpopular opinion because the gang, on the whole, is flawed. Rachel is neither selfish nor manipulative. She cares deeply about her friends and there are multiple instances to prove that. She goes out of her way to save Phoebe’s gig at Central Perk in season 2, takes pains to plan Monica’s wedding day, and helps Joey get his job back. She is incredibly loyal and looks out for her friends again and again.

4 Rachel Is Sneaky

Rachel and Ross are an iconic small-screen couple. Fans overlook their individual mistakes and concentrate on their positive traits and the bigger picture. To these shippers, Rachel and Ross were soulmates. But Reddit user WeezyWally dislikes Rachel’s character. According to them, “She’s just so sneaky and plays too many mind games.”

Few fans will agree with this opinion, though, because Ross was solely in charge of his decision-making and his own life. Therefore, he is squarely responsible for his and Bonnie’s ugly breakup and for humiliating Emily by saying the wrong name at the altar. Furthermore, Rachel was a good ex-girlfriend because she talked him up twice: once, to the pizza delivery girl, Caitlin, and to Elizabeth’s dad, Paul.

3 Rachel Is The Worst

While fans consider Rachel the best character on the show, here’s a detailed no-holds-barred criticism of everything her character stands for. According to the Redditor Necessary-Flatworm-9 she “remained selfish and petty.” They find Rachel’s treated Ross unfairly, saying, “She was SUPER unfair to Ross. Ross attempted to surprise her on their anniversary and Rachel angrily pushed him away for her own selfish reasons.”

This is a lopsided analysis because Ross had no right to bring a picnic to her workplace, especially at a particularly busy time. He feared her independence and more importantly was insecure about her career. There are no solid grounds to call Rachel “selfish” because she was the most dependable and loyal friend in the group.

2 Rachel Is The Most Underrated Character

Rachel is one of the most iconic characters of the ’90s and early 2000s but to Reddit user FarrowtheEdgehog15, “…she rarely gets any attention from fans and the attention she normally gets is usually negative.” They further say, “…Rachel tends to get the most flak from fans and Chandler (deservingly) gets all the praise.”

But this user underestimates how universally acclaimed Rachel’s character is. She is synonymous with the words “iconic” and “relatable.” Yes, she’s not safe from criticism and makes mistakes, but others aren’t exempt from it either. Most fans would agree that Rachel is one of the best female characters on Friends and in the history of TV.

1 Rachel Deserved Better Than Ross

Reddit user, dirtyowl-o deals a blow to Roschel’s romantic pairing by saying, “She (Rachel) deserved better than Ross for sure.” The majority would disagree with this because, all things considered, Ross and Rachel were perfect for each other.

Their intentions were always good, even when their timing was wrong. Rachel only truly loved Ross, a guy who, in turn, didn’t think twice before canceling his TV appearance to get her checked for injuries at the hospital. The latter incident took place immediately after their ugly breakup in season 3, and by the precarious nature of its timing, it says a lot about the love he had for her.
