Friends 6 Ways Ross Is The Gellers’ Favorite Child (& 4 Ways It’s Monica)

Ross and Monica have always had a strange sibling dynamic, whether it’s their unfathomable competitiveness or the way they purposefully drop each other in it. The way the Friends characters interact with each other clearly stems from their childhood and the way their parents treated them.

With one of the recurring jokes in the show being how loved and smothered Ross is by his parents, it’s easy to see how Monica became so competitive and uptight, as it sometimes seems like the Gellers are conducting a social experiment on her. However, there are times when Monica comes out on top, where her parents express real compassion for her, and it could be argued that she is secretly her parents’ favorite.

10 Ross: They Use Monica’s Belongings To Block A Leak

As Jack wants to protect his Porsche at all costs, when there was a heavy downpour of rain that leaked into the garage, he had the option of either blocking the leak with boxes belonging to Monica or boxes belonging to Ross.

As Ross was the genius child and the boxes had all of his old report cards and tests inside of them, it was no question that he would grab Monica’s boxes, and the rain ruined everything that was in them.

9 Monica: They Give Monica The Porsche

Whether it was because he felt guilty for ruining her old possessions from the leak or because he genuinely wanted to give it to her, Jack handed the keys to the Porsche over to Monica almost immediately after upsetting her.

As soon as the keys were in her hand, Monica quickly forgot about those old boxes and Ross felt done over, and it was one of the many times he was jealous of Monica.

8 Ross: Judy Told Rachel She Was The Daughter She Never Had

Monica enduring endless criticism from her mother is one of the many ways fans related to her, and she had to suffer through all those put-downs for the whole series.

The worst came when Judy revealed her total disappointment in her daughter and told Rachel she was the daughter she never had. What made it worse was that she said it right in front of Monica.

7 Monica: Her Marriage To Chandler

There are a lot of things in season one of Friends that wouldn’t happen today, and many of them didn’t last for the whole series, but there was one constant from the very early episodes, and that was Judy kicking Monica while she was down.

However, over the course of Monica and Chandler’s wedding, Judy and Jack were in great spirits and clearly so proud of Monica, even if they didn’t initially believe she’d ever get married.

6 Ross: They Spent Monica’s Wedding Fund On A Home Gym

Compared to Ross, it seemed like Monica would never get married, as before she tied the knot with Chandler, Ross had already been married three times by that point.

However, once she found her Mr. Right, Monica met with her parents to talk about the wedding fund, which had completely dissapeared. Jack confessed that they spent the entire fund on a home gym, which they also used Monica’s room for.

5 Monica: Ross Smoking Pot In College

Ross’ downward spiral into becoming a one-dimensional, angry character is one of the ways he got worse and worse throughout the course of the series, and though there are flashes of hilarious writing, such as the “my sandwich” scene, the character was often quite threatening and terrifying.

But before that, he had a lot of interesting personality traits, and one was his use of marijuana in college. After blaming it on Chandler for years, Ross’ parents were mortified when they found out their A+ star student son was a pot smoker.

4 Ross: They Don’t Support Monica’s Profession

Ever since season one, Ross had been looked at as the star child, with his incredible grades in school and earning his Ph.D., which made Monica’s ambition to become a chef look inferior by comparison, even if she was great at her job.

However, Judy doesn’t seem to think so, and anytime that Monica serves up any kind of dish, Judy looks down on it and refuses to eat it, only after insulting it, of course.

3 Ross: They Blame Monica For Ross’ Ex-Wife Being A Lesbian

Ross was the subject of many of the series’ worst first dates, but the biggest mistake he made when it came to relationships was marrying Carol, as she left him for Susan and the two of them raised Ben, mostly without him.

Upon hearing the news from Ross, Judy immediately turned to Monica, blaming her and accusing her of knowing about it all along, showing that even when Ross is in a time of need, Judy is still able to somehow blame Monica.

2 Monica: They Are Only Hard On Her Because They Care About Her

Friends 6 Ways Ross Is The Gellers’ Favorite Child (& 4 Ways It’s Monica)

As Ross has his life totally on track, or at least when it comes to his career, his parents don’t really need to worry about him as much as they do about Monica. Though Monica is great at what she does, she has had some sketchy interviews and hasn’t always been as successful as her older brother, and that’s the same when it comes to relationships too.

It’s likely that given how often they put her down, her parents really mean well, as they tend to ease up on her the more success she gains throughout the show.

1 Ross: Judy Doesn’t Understand How Women Aren’t Attracted To Him

As one of the characters that many fans of the show can’t stand, there are some people who just don’t like Ross by the end of the series, but his biggest fan is always going to be his mother.

Judy thinks that her son is perfect and, at one point, when talking about his teen years, she exclaims, “They all had a thing for him!” After seeing numerous flashbacks of Ross in college, fans know that this is simply not true and that it’s just a matter of a mother thinking her son is too good for anybody.
