From Adolla Bursts to Ignition Fire Force’s Pyrokinetic Powers Explained

The world of Fire Force is more diverse with its fire-based powers than others. Within this world, there are generations of pyrokinetic users, containing unique subdivisions under these larger classifications. The Adolla Burst is something that further expands on the possibilities of these powers, introducing elements that break what should be scientifically impossible under normal circumstances. Let’s take a look at these classifications as well as some examples of people that fall under them.

Second-Generation Users

From Adolla Bursts to Ignition Fire Force’s Pyrokinetic Powers Explained

The first classification for pyrokinetic powers in Fire Force is second-generation users. These types of people lack the ability to produce their own flames, manipulating external sources of heat instead. Within this generation, there are a variety of ways that people control flames in different ways.

Against an Infernal (a human who has succumbed to spontaneous human combustion) it becomes relatively easy for these second-generation users to fight. Infernals themselves are beings that produce flame, meaning that by fighting against them they already have a fire source that they can use to their advantage. Even without the fire of an Infernal, second-generation users can bring items with them to customize their use of fire.

However, against another fire wielder, battles become a bit more complex. The fact that they can’t produce flame on their own can be a weakness considering that their opponent may opt to not use fire at all or attempt to prevent it from being made. Therefore, in a fight with another user, second-generation characters can attempt to conceal their method of flame production to confuse the opponent.

Company 8’s Maki Oze is a second-generation user who can gain control over other people’s flames. She can transform fire into familiars — even giving them their own names, like Sputter. The familiars take the form of fireballs that can vary in size depending on how much firepower is in her vicinity, allowing her to keep random flames and the flames of other people under control.

It’s in the latter portion of the first season of Fire Force that these flame familiars are given additional benefits. Ordinarily, Maki’s familiars get snuffed out, whether it be through use in battle or by members of her company. However, with the inventor Vulcan’s technology, she uses these familiars for more offensive and stealthy roles. Examples of their use include scouting an area from up in the sky and using the mechanized attachments for these flame familiars to smack her opponents.

Third-Generation Users

Third-generation users evolved from the second-generation and are differentiated by one key factor: they can produce their own flames. This ability, known as “Ignition,” gives them a bit more independence then the previous generation. However, users from this group still suffer the consequences if they use their abilities too much. Pressing the bodies’ limits could cause them to burn up.

Company 8’s Arthur Boyle is unique among the cast of Fire Force as he is a third-generation user who can wield plasma. Generating the plasma from a sword hilt that he carries with him, he can use this plasma in place of a blade to slice through enemies. Not only does this plasma serve as an offensive element, but it also works to shield him from other fire-manipulation powers. Another interesting example of this kind of specialist flame manipulation is Haumea, a member of the White-Clad who can use electricity to manipulate peoples’ minds.

Adolla Burst

The Adolla Burst is said to be special among those who can manipulate flame. The source of this power comes from an alternate dimension, meaning that the users of this flame potentially have access to abilities that could be considered unnatural. Among the members of the third-generation, people who possess an Adolla Burst are wanted by both the White- Clad and Special Fire Force companies. It’s said that Amaterasu, the system that was used to fuel civilization after the Great Cataclysm, is powered by an Adolla Burst.

Shō Kusakabe, the brother of Shinra, is one such user — and an especially powerful one at that. Like Shinra, Shō also possesses an Adolla Burst that helps him to defy ordinary physics. Due to the connection that he has with the Evangelist, Shō’s powers are amplified to absurd levels.

His powers effectively allow him to bend space-time. When we think of ordinary time-stopping abilities we don’t normally think of fire as being a contributing factor, but Shō’s power allows him to control the thermal expansion of the universe. In essence, with this, he can cause the world around him to “pause.” However, as we witnessed during their battle at the end of Season 1, this power isn’t absolute. Shinra was able to get around it by traveling at a speed that would break through the restrictions of time.

The Fifth Pillar

Regarded as the Fifth Pillar and wielder of one of the Adolla Bursts, Inca Kasugatani is a character who loves the thrill of danger. Introduced in Season 2, she can predict where heat signatures are going to move, allowing her to dodge around people and determine where fires are going to happen. Using this, she predicts where house fires will occur and rescues people in exchange for monetary benefit.

However, her powers have evolved to also have an offensive element. She can trace heat signatures with her fingers, following lines from their starting point to their endpoint in order to produce an explosion of flame. Her powers have yet to be fully explored; however, if she fell into the wrong hands, her predictive ability could be devastating for the Special Fire Force. Beyond Maki, Arthur, Shō and Inca, there are still many more creative ways for Fire Force to play with its pyrokinetic powers that we’ve yet to see.
