Frozen Theory The Rock Trolls & Giants Are Related

Could the rock giants in Frozen 2 be related the Trolls introduced in the original movie? Frozen 2 introduces four embodiments of the elements, including Bruni the fire spirit, Nøkk the Kelpie, “Gale” the wind spirit, and the Earth Giants; however, those four elemental beings aren’t the only creatures in the Frozen franchise with a connection to a single element. The trolls, who were introduced in Frozen as ancient experts in elemental magic, are related to the earth element. One theory suggests that these friendly rock beings are descendants of the Earth Giants, based on their similar physical features and stone composition.

At first glance, the Trolls appear to be very different from the Earth Giants. Depicted as large creatures composed of rock, the Earth Giants are hostile to humans and tend to avoid regions inhabited by them. Their hostile nature comes from the curse over the Enchanted Forest, which began 34 years ago when King Runeard built a dam to reduce the Northuldra people’s natural resources, disrupting the balance between human civilization and nature. Alternatively, the Trolls are introduced within Frozen as an integral part of Scandinavian antiquity. They are beings who live in the Valley of the Living Rock, who help cure humans afflicted by elemental magic. The Trolls even took in the orphan Kristoff (and his reindeer companion Sven) when he was just a boy, and help heal Anna of Elsa’s ice magic.

Possibly the most compelling evidence that suggests that the Trolls and Earth Giants are related is the fact that both creatures have very similar physical features and behaviors. The main physical difference between the Trolls and the Earth Giants is their stature, since the Earth Giants can be as tall as mountains while the Rock Trolls in Frozen are even shorter than humans. However, both creatures have the same large feet, oval-shaped noses, stocky bodies, and prominent foreheads. Apart from their physical characteristics, Earth Giants and Trolls also behave similarly, since they’re mainly active during the nighttime and sleep during the day. When both creatures are dormant, they can camouflage themselves within nature: the Trolls take on the form of rocks, while the Earth Giants can be mistaken for mountains.

While the Earth Giants in Frozen 2 seem to exist solely within the wilds of the Enchanted Forest, the Trolls appear to be a variant of the Earth Giant species that possibly began to adopt various aspects of human culture after relocating from the Enchanted Forest to the Valley of the Living Rock to be closer to humans. This would explain why the Trolls have such distinctly human characteristics, such as wearing clothing, despite being elemental beings rooted in nature. Unlike the Trolls, who don moss, grass, and flowers like clothing, Earth Giants don’t wear clothing apart from a few patches of moss growing naturally on their bodies. Trolls also have the capability of speech, believe in romance, and even host weddings in a similar manner to humans, while the Earth Giants appear to be simple elemental beings that are happy existing undisturbed in nature.

Alternatively, while it may be possible that the Rock Trolls are descendants of the Earth Giants that evolved due to their proximity to humans, it could also be possible within the Frozen universe that all elemental beings are automatically considered to be related if they share the same element. In Frozen Fever, a Disney short film in which Elsa (Idina Menzel) accidentally creates little snowmen (“Snowgies”) every time she sneezes, Olaf (Josh Gad) regards the creatures as family, calling them “little brothers.” With this in mind, the Trolls and the Earth Giants could be considered related due to their shared element: Earth.

Since there are multiple embodiments of the elements ice and earth featured within Frozen Fever and Frozen 2, the different variations of elemental beings connected to the same element suggests that there could be multiple embodiments besides Bruni, Nøkk, and “Gale” for the elements of fire, water, and air, which could be explored further within the unconfirmed sequel Frozen 3.
