The Best Competitive NormalType Pokémon In Diamond & Pearl

Normal-type Pokémon are some of the best options that players can choose to add to their competitive team in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. Normal-type Pokémon have been part of the Pokémon series ever since players encountered their first Rattata in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green. Since that time, a healthy number of Normal-type Pokémon have been included generation after generation, and, with so few weaknesses, they’ve become a desirable part of many competitive teams.

Normal-type Pokémon are really anything but normal as far as Pokémon typings are concerned. Normal-type Pokémon have one weakness, no resistance, and one immunity. Fighting-type Pokémon moves are the only ones that can inflict 2x damage on Normal-type Pokémon, and Normal-types have full immunity to Ghost-type moves. Additionally, Normal-type Pokémon moves can inflict only half damage on Rock- and Steel-types, and no Normal-type move can inflict any “super effective” 2x damage against any other type. Although there are far fewer dual-type Normal Pokémon, many of them gain or lose additional weaknesses and resistances because of their secondary typing, like Bibarel or Staraptor.

The best Normal-type Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are pure Normal-types like Snorlax, Porygon-Z, Smeargle, and Blissey. Each of these Pokémon has a large array of moves to choose from, many of which are outside their Normal-typing. This gives these Pokémon additional strengths and no further weaknesses, though they cannot benefit from STAB bonuses. Players can catch a Munchlax in the Grand Underground and evolve it into Snorlax once its friendship level is high enough. Porygon can only be obtained in the Trophy Garden on Route 212 and has to be traded twice with the Upgrade Disc and Dubious Disc to evolve into Porygon2 and Porygon-Z, respectively. Smeargle can be found and caught using the Poké Radar on Route 212 as well. Blissey is the final evolved form of Happiny, and an egg of Happiny can be received from the Hiker near the lower-right side of Hearthome City.

Snorlax is a great tank option on competitive teams in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, able to take multiple attacks and deal just as much damage. When Snorlax is low on health, it can use the move Self-Destruct to unleash one final, powerful attack before fainting.

Players who manage to find and catch Smeargle in Pokémon BDSP can teach it moves like Spore, Spikes, and Stealth Rock thanks to its Sketch move, making Smeargle a great leading Pokémon. Porygon-Z has many powerful Special Attacks available, like Tri Attack, Ice Beam, and Shadow Ball, as well as Trick. With Blissey’s high HP stat, it can make use of Soft-Boiled, Counter, and Echoed Voice to heal itself and deal more damage with every turn.
