Galactus and Brainiac Merged To Make Marvel & DCs Scariest Villain

There are few heavy hitters in comics as powerful as the cosmic juggernauts Galactus and Brainiac. Galactus is Marvel’s Devourer of Worlds, a being that can destroy planets with ease. Meanwhile, Brainiac is one of Superman’s biggest foes, who’s long been a thorn to the side of the Justice League and gets pleasure shrinking cities down to size, literally. Combined, the villains once became Galactiac.

In the mid-’90s, Marvel and DC created a new publishing imprint called Amalgam Comics that spun out of their Marvel vs DC crossover series. Amalgam was a universe where both Marvel and DC heroes combined and merged to create all-new characters. Among the new creations were Batclaw (Batman and Wolverine), Doctor Strange Fate (Doctor Strange and Doctor Fate), and Spider-Boy (Superboy and Spider-Man). Marvel and DC actually shared a character that existed in both of their main continuities. One of the villains to come from the merged universes was Galactiac, who, as his name suggests, was part Galactus and part Braniac.

In Challengers of the Fantastic #1, which combined DC’s Challengers of the Unknown with the Fantastic Four, the team’s remixed origin is explored with the superteam being warned that Galactiac is coming. Uatu The Guardian explains Galactiac is the highest form of mind and machine and drains planets of their lifeblood in order to recharge his own energy. The villain wastes no time crashing on Earth, telling the Challengers that he isn’t there to destroy the planet entirely, but, like Brainiac, wants to bottle and miniaturize part of Earth (in this case New York) to study it. He also doesn’t take too kindly to the Challengers’ attempt to stop him.

When Rocky Grimm attacks Galactiac, the cosmic being transforms him into a four-armed version of The Thing – who fights against his former friends. As the fight plays out, Johnny Stormtrooper is teleported into the body of Galactus, where, after his Terra-Matrix is accidentally destroyed, he becomes vulnerable. Johnny uses a special gun to attack Galactiac’s neural junction, which freezes the villain up. With a body that’s essentially frozen, Galactiac’s head ejects as it tells the Challengers he’s got a back-up body and will return one day to destroy them.

Ultimately, Galactiac shows that he’s the most powerful parts of Galactus and Brainiac – even if he’s defeated in this issue. He’s got immense cosmic power, can shape-shift as needed, and is nearly invulnerable. He’s got the pure world-destroying power that the Devourer of Worlds has, as well as the intellect of Brainiac. The skull-esque mask on Galactus’ body is also a terrifying look. Thankfully, the Challengers were lucky enough to get the upper-hand on the cosmic giant, otherwise, they were about to become his latest science experiment to study.
