Game Over Man! The Most Brutal Reviews

It looks like Netflix has yet another critical dud on their hands with their latest release, Game Over, Man! Following on the heels of similarly-loathed (by movie reviewers, anyway) original films like The Cloverfield Paradox, Mute, and Bright, the streaming giant looks to have come up short once again. Netflix’s latest critical punching bag is an action/comedy from the minds behind the hit Comedy Central show Workaholics. The trio of stars from that recently concluded series — Adam DeVine, Anders Holm, and Blake Anderson — reunite for Game Over, Man!, but their stoner-ific riff on Die Hard is being met with some absolutely savage reviews.

Game Over, Man! sets its three stars as hapless housekeepers who elect to do their best impersonations of John McClane after a group of terrorists take control of the fancy hotel they work at. No longer restricted by the confines of cable television, DeVine, Holm, and Anderson let loose an endless barrage of F-bombs and dick jokes, very few of which are likely going to land with viewers outside the Workaholics fanbase. The over-the-top violence will raise a few eyebrows, as will the film’s confusingly dated treatment of its gay characters. There isn’t much more to Game Over, Man! than that, so if anything you’ve read so far has left you feeling a bit uneasy about this movie, you might want to steer clear.

If it is not taxing enough to sit through the medley of puerile humour and obnoxious dick jokes, the frequency with which the makers of this film keep blowing up bodies (both human and otherwise, believe it or not) — and that too in such excruciatingly gory detail — is frankly exhausting. By the end, you feel like you are going to throw up … In the end, Game Over, Man! is a disgusting gore fest and tasteless buffoonery in the garb of comedy that relentlessly keeps dealing blow after blow to your finer sensibilities throughout its 100-minute length. — Firstpost

With its inexplicable combination of phallic revulsion, fascination, and revulsion at its own fascination, this wretched film hates itself more than we ever could. — The Guardian (UK)

Game Over Man! The Most Brutal Reviews

Game Over, Man! is a lesser version of Paul Blart: Mall Cop … a sloppy production, with screaming and bullying used as a placeholder for actual jokes. The characters are such enormous jerks that they probably don’t deserve to succeed, at anything, so it’s hard to want to follow their adventures through an entire film. — IGN

…a step-up from Netflix’s Adam Sandler flicks – but not by much … It’s dumb – but not in a good way – and it’s just another disposable straight-to-Netflix movie. — JoBlo

This almost laugh-free comedy, a Netflix Original directed by Kyle Newacheck, is distinguished by a relentless level of outrageous yet strangely listless vulgarity. There are several penis jokes, including one requiring a high level of exposure on Mr. Devine’s part. Several characters die gorily, prompting other characters to make observations like “He is full-on spaghetti and meat sauce.” There is a “why am I watching this” analingus sight “gag.” The genuinely amusing comedian Joel McHale makes a cameo appearance in this mess. I hope that’s because he lost a bet. — New York Times

There are a plenty of gags here that just don’t work or feel disappointingly half-baked; a comedic subplot revolving around Joel being gay, for instance, is desperately stuck in the early 2000s and lacks the witty subversion you might expect from this troupe of creative minds. Meanwhile, if you’re averse to gross-out gags, you should probably steer clear also, because the film practically revolves around them, and typically, they vary wildly in quality. — Flickering Myth

Game Over, Man! is exactly the kind of movie you would expect to get made when a massive streaming company grows so desperate for content they’ll green-light the first half-baked idea a trio of semi-famous TV stars pitches their way … the downside to generating original content for Netflix is that there isn’t any oversight whatsoever; no one to point out how many of the jokes aren’t working. — IndieWire

If you’re expecting casual comedy, this is not it. It’s OK to push boundaries, but usually doing so deserves an impetus. Without one, it just seems like a running list of “what can we spend this money?” on moments that budgets and cable censors previously got in the way of. — Destructoid

What’s far more worrisome is the wealth of homophobia underpinning most of the bigger jokes in Game Over, Man!, its sensibilities rooted firmly in a bygone era where the mere existence of a gay person in your film was the punchline to a comic setpiece … It’s almost the opposite of gay panic: mining jokes from a straight person’s idea of how fun, cool, and crazy gay people’s sex lives must be, which manages to be every bit as distasteful in an entirely different way. At all turns, Game Over, Man! is a cynical vehicle for the kind of outdated humor that fell out of style more than a decade ago. — Consequence of Sound
