The Monday-hating, lasagna-loving cat Garfield has been announced as Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’s first free DLC character. He joins an extensive collection of playable characters from series that have aired on Nickelodeon over the years, like SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more. Before the game’s launch, many gamers were hyped to play against friends with characters they grew up watching.

With the long-time success of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, it was a matter of time before another attempted to dethrone to world’s most popular platform fighter, and on October 5, 2021, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl launched onto the world. After spending some time with the game, players were disappointed with the lack of voice acting, character customization, and charm from playing as characters people spent years of their lives watching. Developers of the game, Ludosity, have made commitments to add free DLC to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl with costumes, new characters and hinted at the possibility that voice acting could be added in the future.

A reveal trailer (via IGN) released this morning shows a highlight reel of the game’s playable characters paired with catchy music until the music dims and large text drops the major announcement that the first free DLC character for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will be Garfield. After we get the first look at the orange cat’s design in the game the trailer continues with working gameplay showing Garfield using counters and a variety of attacks across the cartoon battlefield. The new playable character will be released on December 9th and will be the 21st character to join the roster.

The lazy orange cat is the first free DLC character Ludosity has shown, but no way is it the last. Developers have teased that more characters will be added, but data miners hungry for more information grew impatient. One day after Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl released data miners found leaks suggesting that more characters would soon be added. One of these leaks correctly hinted at Garfield joining the game, so there is hope that the leaks could be valid, which means that one day Spongebob and Squidward could finally brawl it out and settle things once and for all.

Since the release of the competitive platform fighter, players have voiced their concerns and issues with the game online. One major complaint is that the lack of voice-acting takes a surprising amount of character from the fighters, leaving battles feeling stale. However, VO may be getting added to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. The free DLC, more characters to come, and updates prove that developers have not abandoned hope in their game as they continue to work to make it as enjoyable as possible.
