Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 will have a multiverse story, and Sony could help set it up with Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Spider-Man spent years outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before Sony and Marvel Studios came to an agreement to share the character. The success of Tom Holland’s new iteration of Spider-Man, though, reignited Sony’s hopes of building a shared universe of their own. It began in 2018 with Venom and will continue with Venom 2, although the movies are so far not connected to the MCU.

The possibility of Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters crossing over with Holland’s MCU Spider-Man seems more likely now more than ever. The development of Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 has brought countless rumors about characters from past Spider-Man films appearing. It is now obvious that the movie will deal with the multiverse in some way, especially with Doctor Strange appearing before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And while fans look at how other MCU properties can tease Spider-Man 3’s multiverse story, Venom 2 can do it in several ways.

One of the biggest rumors about Venom 2 is that Tom Holland will appear in some form. Similar rumors circulated before the release of Venom, but those turned out to be false. Holland’s appearance in Venom 2 is far from confirmed, but any such appearance could be tied to the multiverse. Marvel and Sony only have a few options to make such a role fit with the story and it would be somewhat surprising if Venom 2 made the SPUMC officially part of the main MCU reality with Holland’s cameo. Instead, Holland could appear as the Spider-Man from Venom’s universe. This could get confusing with Holland playing two different versions of Spider-Man, but it’d be an intriguing seed to plant before Spider-Man 3.

Venom 2 could feature Holland as a new iteration of Spider-Man, but the meet up that fans want to see more is between Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and Holland’s MCU Spidey. This can still be accomplished in Venom’s sequel and set up Spider-Man 3 in a few ways. Holland’s cameo could potentially see him briefly appear in an alternate reality and confused with what is happening as a tie to his multiverse adventures. There’s even the chance that Holland’s appearance could be used to set up Venom joining Spider-Man 3’s ensemble. A potential post-credits scene where Venom is transported to a new reality after defeating Carnage would go a long way in setting up Spider-Man 3 and teasing his appearance in the film.

The possibilities of what Venom 2 could do to tie to Spider-Man 3 are vast, as it doesn’t even have to require an appearance by Holland. The trailer for Morbius confirmed Vulture (Michael Keaton) and included a poster featuring Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. There’s no telling what Sony plans to do with Venom: Let There Be Carnage, but it might go beyond Holland. The sequel could feature or reference other versions of Spider-Man or include other characters who will appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming 3.
