It’s hard not to root for Jess Mariano and Rory Gilmore on Gilmore Girls as they have chemistry as soon as they first meet. But while they’re a super popular couple and fans still ship them, even wishing that they would have reunited in the Netflix revival A Year In The Life, some viewers aren’t so certain that this love story is one of the show’s best.
Some Gilmore Girls fans find Jess and Rory’s love story to be problematic, and they’re sharing their thoughts and opinions on Reddit, wondering why Jess acts the way that he does in some instances.
10 Jess Is Mean To Lorelai
One Redditor thinks that Jess is so rude to Lorelai that it doesn’t make sense for Rory to date him. The fan wrote, “I never sympathized with Jess, because the show makes it very hard to like him as a character.”
There are so many great Rory and Lorelai Gilmore Girls moments thanks to their strong bond, and it does seem like Rory should care more about the way that Jess treats her mom. Something does feel off about this situation, and it feels like Rory ignores the problems here.
9 Do Jess And Rory Go On Actual Dates?
It’s sweet watching Rory and Dean Forester go out for their three-month anniversary dinner and yet it’s tough to remember Jess and Rory going on official dates. This is a point that Reddit user Padme1418 brings up, wondering what Jess and Rory do on dates. The fan explained, “Jess had no interest in hanging out with Lorelai, he never really tried to get along with Lane, and he wasn’t exactly a planner for dates. He also wasn’t one to go to parties or get togethers.”
It does seem strange that Rory and Jess don’t seem to go on dinner dates or spend time together in a careful, more thoughtful way. This is in sharp contrast to her romances with Dean and Logan which seem much different.
8 Jess Is Too Immature For All A Relationship Entails
While many Gilmore Girls fans like Jess’s journey and feel that he learns a lot as he gets older, it’s true that he seems to hate commitment during the show’s first few seasons. One Redditor thinks that he can’t be in a real relationship with Rory, writing, “He always wanted it to be just him and Rory. I think going to the events and meeting the friends and family just made him feel like the new Dean. He wasn’t ready for a relationship.”
Even though viewers ship Rory and Jess, it’s definitely true that he hates when Rory wants him to go somewhere public or hang out with her family, and that spells trouble for their future.
7 Jess Says He Put In Effort Only To Win Rory Over
One Redditor finds it problematic that Jess admits to Rory that he put more effort in before they officially began dating. The fan explained, “Jess literally admitted that now that he has Rory, he doesn’t have to try anymore.”
Gilmore Girls fans love Dean because he plans romantic dates and does what he can to make sure that he and Rory have a happy relationship full of quality time. The same thing can’t really be said about Jess, as he is very chill and laidback.
6 Do Jess And Rory Have Anything In Common?
When Rory and Jess meet, they talk a lot about books, and they’re interested in each other because they share this passion. But does having this one thing in common mean that they’re meant to be together? The same Redditor made another good point about Jess and Rory’s love story: “Reading the same books doesn’t make a good relationship.”
It’s definitely sweet and romantic that these characters bond over literature, but it’s true that they’re not on the same page about other things, from the future to school to what being in a relationship actually means to them.
5 Jess Should Tell Lorelai And Rory That He’s Sorry
Gilmore Girls fans feel that Jess becomes a better character, but it can still be tough to watch some of his early behavior. He’s rude, dismissive of what others think and feel, and not always an ideal partner for Rory.
Reddit user DreamingBarbie agrees that Jess becomes more mature, but they wish that he would give Lorelai and others, including Rory, an apology. The fan wrote, “I know he grows and changes, but it always bothered me that he never apologized for his past behavior. I think he really owed Lorelai an apology.”
4 Rory Chooses Jess But He Doesn’t Treat Her Well
When Rory and Dean break up and she decides to date Jess, it feels exciting that they finally have a chance to be together. Before too long, though, it becomes clear that this new relationship is on shaky ground. Reddit user Milady003 wrote, “I understand that he had a bad childhood and maybe had reasons to be defensive, but it was so sad watching him treat her this way after she left Dean for him.”
While Dean does instigate the breakup, it feels like Rory is already halfway out the door as she flirts with Jess and can’t stop thinking about him, not to mention Jess and Rory’s kiss at Sookie’s wedding.
3 Rory And Jess Don’t Communicate With Each Other
When comparing Jess and Rory’s relationship to Rory’s time with Logan Huntzberger and Dean, one thing stands out: how little Jess and Rory actually talk about their feelings and what they want from the relationship.
Reddit user PrivateSpeaker doesn’t think that Rory and Jess talk to each other properly. The fan explained, “So many scenes with Rory and Jess not communicating well with one another, for example, when Jess refuses to tell how he got the black eye.”
2 Fans Don’t See Enough Of Jess And Rory’s Relationship
While Rory’s time with Dean and Logan feels like complete, detailed relationships, some fans don’t think that there is enough screen time of Jess and Rory’s actual time together.
Reddit user Hot-Ruin-3646 wrote, “We only saw them fighting, flirting, and making out. we never saw them go the concert, talk abt wanting to have sex, watching a movie together, hanging out on weekends.” Reddit user elizabethaneyre agreed, calling their love story “one-dimensional” without enough “depth.” When looking at Jess and Rory’s relationship each season, it does feel like they have more interesting conversations before they start dating and then later when he visits Rory.
1 Jess Shouldn’t Flirt With Rory When She’s Dating Dean
It does feel like Jess and Rory are destined to date, but at the same time, it’s hard to agree with them flirting and sharing a kiss when Rory is still in a relationship with Dean. Reddit user jessdot wrote, “I don’t like how he blatantly pursued Rory and antagonized Dean, who had never done anything to him.”
While it makes sense that Jess is jealous of Dean and so he doesn’t treat him well, it’s definitely hard to agree with his bad behavior here.
