Ghostbusters Afterlife Sets Up More Movies In Franchise Says Director

Jason Reitman, director of the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife, has expressed hope for future movies in the Ghostbusters franchise. After the franchise failed to reboot itself upon the negative reception of the 2016 film, a new Ghostbusters film that followed the same continuity as the original two films was announced in January 2019. The film is set to star a number of returning Ghostbusters cast members, including Bill Murray as Peter Venkman, Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz, Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore, Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett, and Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz. Joining them are franchise newcomers, Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Paul Rudd.

The film is said to revolve around Coon, Grace, and Wolfhard’s characters who are all relatives of Egon Spengler, previously portrayed by the late Harold Ramis in the original film. The two children soon discover their connection to the ghostbuster and must suit up as members of the group themselves to stop the sudden surge of supernatural activity in their small town. After a rocky release due to the coronavirus pandemic and being delayed four separate times, the film is currently set for release in theaters on November 19.

CBR reports that at an NYCC Ghostbusters panel alongside the film’s cast and crew, Reitman expressed great hope that the release of his Ghostbusters film paves the way for various other directors to create their own installments within the Ghostbusters universe.

I want to see Ghostbusters movies from all of my favorite directors. And we hope that this sets the table for that.

Both Reitman and his father, Ivan Reitman, director of the original Ghostbusters, then went on to detail their want to return to the original continuity of the first two films and continue the story of those Ghostbusters, returning to the iconic Ecto-01 and original equipment of the 80s classics. Furthermore, Reitman expressed the film’s definite theatrical release to reflect the magic of the original film’s release in 80s theaters.

Development of a third film to add to the original two films’ continuity has been in the works since as early as 1989. After the release of Ghostbusters II, a sequel titled Ghostbusters III: Hellbent was in development, however, the project was eventually canceled after most of the principal cast decided against it, with the story eventually being recycled into Ghostbusters: The Videogame. Later attempts were made until the many delays ultimately led to the Ghostbusters 2016 reboot, which was panned by critics.

With the official release of Afterlife being the only confirmed film connected to the original two films in thirty-two years, the franchise’s future is looking brighter than it has in decades, and the possibility of future films to continue the original’s legacy is more likely than ever. Despite past resentment about returning for future sequels, the original cast returning for Afterlife can possibly indicate future reprisals and the support of the Reitmans further promotes this idea. Viewers will now just have to wait until November 19 to see if Ghostbusters: Afterlife is able to live up to the franchise’s legacy.
