Ghostbusters Afterlife to Pass $100 Million at Box Office This Weekend

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set to hit a major box office milestone this weekend, passing the $100 million mark. The Ghostbusters franchise originated with the 1984 Ivan Reitman comedy starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis. The film became an instant phenomenon, rising to #1 in the domestic box office for that year. It spawned comics, video games, two cartoon series, and a 1989 sequel, though in recent years the franchise had receded to the background until the 2016 Paul Feig reboot, which starred Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig, and Melissa McCarthy.

This year’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife resets the continuity of the franchise back to its original canon. It follows siblings Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) as they move to a small Oklahoma town with their single mother Callie (Carrie Coon), who is the estranged daughter of former Ghostbuster Egon Spengler (Ramis). The film follows the kids as they discover the legacy of their grandfather and work to halt the apocalyptic reemergence of Gozer. Ghostbusters: Afterlife opened on November 19 and is currently in its third weekend in theaters.

Per Deadline, the weekend’s box office projections have officially arrived, and they place Ghostbusters: Afterlife at $102.1 million by the end of the day. That take is only in the domestic box office, with an additional $42.9 million in global markets bringing its total gross to $145 million worldwide. This milestone make Ghostbusters: Afterlife the 12th movie to cross that mark in the domestic box office this year. This is a strong showing for a film in 2021’s weak, pandemic-rattled box office. To compare, by the end of 2019, 29 films had crossed the same mark.

So far, Afterlife is still trailing behind every other Ghostbusters film. All three previous entries grossed over $200 million by the end of their box office run, with Ghostbusters reaching $296.6 million, Ghostbusters II hitting $215.4 million, and Ghostbusters 2016 taking in a respectable $229.1 million. However, it’s important to note two things. First, Afterlife is only in its third weekend and has more time to scoop up more viewers in the upcoming Christmas family movie season. Second, it has a budget that is half of what was spent on the 2016 film, so in terms of profit, it’s already making solid headway.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be facing stiff competition coming up in the following weeks. This weekend didn’t have any major releases to compete with Afterlife and Encanto, which continued to top the charts, but soon they will have to contend with the likes of Speilberg’s glitzy West Side Story remake and the Marvel juggernaut Spider-Man: No Way Home. Both releases will likely drive Ghostbusters out of more and more theaters so it will be interesting to see where that final total winds up compared to Afterlife’s predecessors.
