Dean Forester was Rory’s first boyfriend and love. She compared most of her relationships to her time with Dean and even went back to him years later when she was at Yale. However, fans who grew up watching Gilmore Girls can’t help but notice Dean’s neediness.

He’s clingy, possessive, and has Rory walking on eggshells whenever she has good or bad news to tell him. She constantly has to say “Don’t be mad” whenever she breaks plans or is running late, which only exacerbates Dean’s neediness.

10 When Rory Lost Her Bracelet

When Rory and Dean first became a couple, he made her a bracelet for her 16th birthday. Rory loved the bracelet and wore it all the time. But in “Lost and Found,” Dean looked at Rory’s wrist and realized it wasn’t there. He freaked out and demanded to know where it was. Rory—who didn’t realize the bracelet was lost in the first place—panicked because she had no idea where it was. She had no choice but to lie about where it was because Dean’s neediness about her wearing his bracelet was through the roof.

9 When Rory Didn’t Say “I Love You” Back

To show how much Rory meant to Dean, he showed her an old car he was fixing up for her. Rory was astonished by his hard work and by the fact that she would soon have a car that she didn’t need to pay for.

While the two were sitting in the car gazing at the stars, Dean told her that he loved her. Rory was caught off guard and wasn’t ready to say it back. Instead of giving Rory some space and respecting her response, Dean got mad. His neediness for approval was so great that he broke up with her.

8 When Rory Wanted To Focus On Her Extracurriculars

Dean knew early on that Rory was serious about attending Harvard and had a good chance of going. However, when she realized she would need to put even more work into just being considered for Harvard, she became alarmed. Dean’s constant need for attention and affection didn’t help the matter. He shamed her for wanting to spend time focusing on school work and extracurriculars, which was anything but fair. Rory already felt stressed enough.

7 When She Needed A Friday Night Alone

When Lorelai spent the night away, Rory had the whole house to herself. Instead of throwing a party like some kids her age did, Rory wanted a quiet night at home where she could read and study. Her plan blew up when Paris made an unexpected visit, and the night went up in flames by the time Jess arrived unannounced. Things only got worse from there.

Rory told Dean that she didn’t want to see him or have him over because she was focusing on work. But did he listen? Nope. He told her he was coming over anyway and was beyond annoyed when he showed up to Jess and Paris eating in her kitchen.

6 He Called 14 times In One Night

In “Back in the Saddle,” Rory was astounded when she came home to 14 voicemails from Dean on her home phone. He kept calling her to see when she would be home. While some could see it as endearing that Dean checked on her so much, it was overbearing and clingy. Lorelai told Dean to ease up afterward but it only drove him to be more concerned.

5 He Was Whiny About His Softball Game

Dean and Luke were on the same casual softball team in Stars Hollow. In one episode, Dean asked a very busy Rory to stop by and watch his game. Rory declined because of all of the schoolwork she had. As usual, Dean became frustrated that Rory wasn’t supporting him, even though her schoolwork was more important than his softball game that had zero effect on their lives. As if his neediness wasn’t sad enough, he asked Rory to do her homework at the game…

4 The Car Crash Letter

When Rory and Jess got into a car accident, Dean was out of town with family. And as sad as it sounds, Rory was lucky that Dean was away during the accident because he overreacts every time she mentions Jess’s name.

Knowing that Dean was going to handle the news poorly, she wrote him a letting explaining everything and had to note that Jess was no longer in town. While reading the letter, Dean kicked his luggage out of anger, making Rory feel uncomfortable. Having the need to apologize for virtually everything she did because of Dean’s need for approval was exhausting.

3 He Would Wait Outside Her House

The ’90s and early 2000s were a special time for teens because it was before cell phones were popular. Kids would ride their bikes and call their friend’s landlines before heading over to hang out. Dean waiting for Rory at her house was normal for kids of this era, but Dean (as always) took it too far. Not only would he call her incessantly but he would wait for her at her house if he didn’t hear from her. There were moments where Rory would ignore him on purpose because she couldn’t fulfill how much he needed from her.

2 Romeo & Juliet Rehersal

When Rory was in Chilton’s version of Romeo & Juliet, she was cast as Juliet while Tristan was cast as Romeo. Rory couldn’t stand Tristan but did what she had to do for the better of her grade. Rory kept this news from Dean knowing that he would be annoyed by the fact that Tristan would have to kiss her at the end of the play. And just as she thought, as soon as Dean found out about Tristan, he freaked out. He became so bothered by it that he forced Rory to let him watch their rehearsal.

1 The Book Fair

When there was a book fair in town, Rory became excited by the sea of books flooding in. She could have spent hours there. As always, Dean couldn’t be more interested in the book fair and gave Rory grief for spending so much time there. Instead of taking all the time she needed, she kept apologizing to a grumpy Dean instead of enjoying herself.
