The Gilmore Girls’ Lorelai and Emily have very different approaches to motherhood, but the two of them have done tons of good for their daughters.

Gilmore Girls is the ultimate mother-daughter show, depicting relationships between Lorelai and her teenage daughter, Rory, as well as her own mother, Emily. While Rory and Lorelai behave more like best friends than a mother-daughter pair, Emily and Lorelai have a more tense, estranged dynamic.

Lorelai and Emily are both good moms in their own ways. While Lorelai is much more forward with her love, Emily reveals her kindness and motherly heart in more subtle ways. The two find common ground throughout the series, and, above all, want Rory’s life to be filled with unending happiness and opportunities.

10 Lorelai: Supporting Rory’s Future

From the very first episode, Lorelai was incredibly supportive of her daughter’s ambitious dreams for her future education, something she didn’t get to experience because of her experience as a teen mom.

She put her own pride aside to ask her estranged parents for money to pay for prep school, took Rory on a tour of Harvard, and decorated her room accordingly when she committed to Yale. Even though she felt a little hurt that Rory would choose Yale over Harvard, she eventually came around and made the choice a celebratory occasion.

9 Emily: Writing Lorelai a Check

Despite their estrangement, Emily welcomed her daughter Lorelai back into her Hartford home with open arms. She immediately suspected that Lorelai was there to ask for money, but she was pleasantly surprised when she learned it was for her granddaughter’s education. She was quick to give her a check, all she asked for in return was that she see her girls once a week for dinner and be kept updated on Rory’s life.

8 Lorelai: Rory’s First Breakup

After Dean broke up with Rory after building her a car for their three-month anniversary, she came home in emotional shock.

Refusing to address her heartbreak, Lorelai assured her that it was okay if she needed to let it all out, and she would be right there to wallow with her. Eventually, Rory succumbed to her broken heart, and Lorelai made sure she had her mother’s company and all the junk food in the world.

7 Emily: Attending Lorelai’s Graduation

Even though it was the future she envisioned for her only child, Emily was supportive of Lorelai’s decision to attend business school at a community college in her 30s.

When Lorelai announced she was graduating, Emily insisted that she and Richard attend the ceremony, and they ended up being the only family in attendance, as Rory was in New York with Jess at the time. Emily shed tears of joy for her daughter’s accomplishment, and it was a rare occasion to see her express how proud she was of Lorelai.

6 Lorelai: Being By Rory’s Side with Sherry

When Rory was invited to her father’s new girlfriend’s baby shower, she was terrified to go it alone. She begged her mother to accompany her, something that would have been very awkward for Lorelai given that she and Sherry were both mothers of Christopher’s children.

However, Lorelai did it anyway, never leaving her daughter’s side. Additionally, she raced to the hospital to be with Rory when Sherry was in labor and Christopher was running behind. Lorelai could’ve refused, given the ridiculous nature of the request, but she once again showed up for her daughter during a tough moment.

5 Emily: Mending Luke and Lorelai’s Relationship

Emily might have been a co-conspirator in breaking up Lorelai and Luke (the first time) by insisting that Christopher get her back, but she didn’t get off without a guilty conscience.

Realizing the damage she had done to her daughter’s serious relationship, she attempted to make up for her mistake and tell Luke that it was all her fault. In the most Emily way possible, she coldly made Luke realize that he had Lorelai’s heart all along. It was big of Emily to put her personal feelings for Luke aside and put her daughter’s happiness first.

4 Lorelai: Rory’s First Night at Yale

When Rory misread her move-in date for Yale, Lorelai did everything in her power to assure that they got her settled in a timely manner with the help of Luke and his truck.

When she went to drop off Rory for her first night in the dorm, her daughter couldn’t seem to let her mom go. Lorelai ended up staying the night, making Rory’s first day at Yale memorable and comforting with her mother by her side.

3 Emily: Having Her Girls’ Backs

In addition to being Lorelai’s mother, Emily took in Rory as if she were her own in Season 6 following her departure from Yale and fight with her mother.

Emily could be brash to her Gilmore Girls, but, when it came down to it, she had their backs and would defend them whenever necessary. Case in point, when Emily learned that the Huntzberger’s insinuated that Rory wasn’t good enough for their son at a family dinner, Emily put her Shira Huntzberger place with some award-winning insults and a smile on her face.

2 Lorelai: Setting Boundaries

Lorelai bailed Rory out of jail when she stole a yacht at the end of season five, but she couldn’t support her decision to drop out of Yale following a few mean remarks from Mitchum Huntzberger.

Lorelai set boundaries between her and her daughter, making it known that, if she dropped out of college, she would not be able to live at home. She stuck true to her word despite how hard it was for her to fight with her daughter and built-in best friend. Eventually, Rory came to appreciate Lorelai’s behavior, and the two made up.

1 Emily: Not Caring About Being Repaid

Although Lorelai always saw her mother’s demand for Friday Night Dinners as a form of punishment for begging her for money, Emily truly just wanted to be involved in her daughter and granddaughter’s lives.

When Lorelai repaid Emily for Chilton, she concluded that Friday Night Dinners would be over, at least for her, because she was no longer in her parents’ debt. This broke Emily’s heart because she wanted her daughter to want to continue spending time with her, never caring about being paid back for helping Rory go to school. At the end of the day, she just wanted to be Lorelai’s mom and make up for the time lost between them.
