Google TV User Profiles What They Are & Why You Should Use Them

Google’s reimagined TV interface, the appropriately named Google TV, is finally getting support for user profiles. Ever since the Google TV experience made its debut with the updated Chromecast dongle a year ago, the platform has lacked the ability to create individual user profiles. The service did allow users to add multiple accounts, but content preference was still tailored in accordance with the watching habits of the primary account.

That changed with the arrival of Kids Profiles on Chromecast with Google TV, allowing parents to create a separate profile for kids with access to a select few apps and the ability to assign screen time, among other controls. In contrast, rival offerings, such as Apple TV and Fire TV, have been offering multi-user support for some time now. That difference is finally going to change for folks loyal to Google’s TV experience.

With the arrival of multi-profile support, Google TV users can create a different profile for each member of the family. The designated user of a profile will see content based on their interest and preference, and the discovery aspect will also be tailored accordingly. In addition to personalized recommendations for each profile, users will also be able to maintain a separate watchlist for the content they want to explore. Google TV is a great package for its asking price, and the arrival of user profiles further enhances its appeal.

User Profiles Makes Content Watching Less Chaotic

Another helpful aspect is that the Google Assistant experience will also be tailored to each user profile. For example, when users summon the virtual assistant for commands such as “what should I watch,” the assistant will take a look at their watching history to recommend content. It’s not just for content either. Based on the Google account linked to a user profile, the assistant can also provide details about other queries as well, such as calendar entries. For those wondering about app syncing and credentials, there is some good news here too. Irrespective of how many user profiles are created, all the streaming and entertainment apps that have been downloaded using the primary Google account will be synced across all user profiles.

What this means is users don’t have to download those apps for each profile, neither will they have to struggle with adding the username and password for each sub-account. Google says that profiles will begin rolling out for Chromecast with Google TV and to eligible Sony and TCL smart TVs powered by Google TV soon. Unlike the new glanceable cards for the home screen (another new feature on the way), user profiles on Google TV will be rolled out globally.
