Gossip Girl Part 2 Episode 1 Focuses On Fallout of Obie & Julien Kiss

Gossip Girl part 2, episode 1 will focus on the fallout of Julien and Obie’s kiss. Based on the teen drama of the same name, which itself was based on the books by Cecily von Ziegesar, HBO Max’s reboot of Gossip Girl takes place nearly a decade after the conclusion of the original series and follows a new cast of Manhattan private schoolers that fall under the watchful eye of the titular blogger. The first half of Gossip Girl season 1, which wrapped up back in August, ended with a number of significant developments for the characters.

When fans last saw the students of the prestigious Constance Billard, and their teachers, the love triangle of sorts involving Audrey (Emily Alyn Lind), Aki (Evan Mock), and Max (Thomas Doherty) evolves into a threesome. And, as the teachers are concerned, Rafa (Jason Gotay) convinces Kate (Tavi Gevinson) that he should help run the Gossip Girl account again. This is bad news for Max especially, given the history that the pair have. But perhaps the biggest development in Gossip Girl part 1, episode 6, was the kiss between Obie (Eli Brown) and Julien (Jordan Alexander). Even though the two had recently broken up, and Obie moved on to a relationship with Julien’s half-sister Zoya (Whitney Peak), the two exes seem to find their way back to each other.

Speaking with EW to promote the debut of Gossip Girl season 1, part 2, which premieres on November 25 with three new episodes, showrunner Joshua Safran touched on the fact that the first installment of part 2 will be focused on Thanksgiving – a staple of the original Gossip Girl. When asked, he also noted that the episode will deal directly with the fallout from Obie and Julien’s kiss. Safran’s quote is included below.

“The whole first episode back is about the after-effects of that choice. You learn how far that choice actually went and whether that’s a choice that both people are making forever, or just made in a moment. It’s prime Gossip Girl to not be able to actually deal with how you feel about something because Gossip Girl is on your back ready to expose it. I feel like we’re back in prime Gossip Girl Thanksgiving territory, where every secret is going to come out in the worst possible way.”

As shown in the trailer for Gossip Girl season 1, part 2, the rift that the kiss causes between Julien and Zoya could prove long-lasting. Though the twist that the reboot provides does factor into the plot, showing that the teachers are the new anonymous bloggers, the real heart of the show is the sibling relationship between Julien and Zoya. Viewers have seen, over the course of the reboot’s six episodes, how the half-sisters would quickly join together then fall apart just as quickly. It remains to be seen whether this pattern continues in the second half of Gossip Girl season 1.

It’s tempting to compare Julien and Zoya to Serena (Blake Lively) and Blair (Leighton Meester), the best friends from the original Gossip Girl who fought and made up just as often. One crucial difference in the reboot, which has been noted by critics and fans alike, is that Julien and Zoya are a lot less mean to each other, and less willing to go for the jugular the way their predecessors were. That, however, might change in the upcoming Gossip Girl episodes.
