Green Lantern Confirms The Deadliest Black Lantern Has Returned To DC

Warning! Spoilers for Suicide Squad #10 by DC Comics

The Suicide Squad is recruiting an unlikely member to their roster, as the Green Lantern villain the Black Hand has made a surprise return to the DC Universe. In Suicide Squad #10, Task Force X is sent to space, where the team is on a deadly rescue mission. It turns out their target is the deadliest Black Lantern in the galaxy, who is locked away by the Green Lantern Corps.

The Black Hand has been a villain to the Green Lantern for more than 50 years, initially appearing in Green Lantern #29 by John Broome and Gil Kane. Originally, Black Hand gained his power after developing a device allowing him to siphon power from the Green Lantern’s Power Ring. Later retcons made the device built by the Red Lantern Atrocitus, which gained the attention of the Green Lantern Corps. After being imprisoned, Black Hand would hear voices telling him to reanimate the dead. The villain would murder his own family and kill himself, only to be reanimated by the Guardian Scar, who gave him a Black Lantern Power Ring. With his newfound powers to reanimate the dead, Black Hand would resurrect a number of heroes into Black Lanterns, leading to the events of Blackest Night.

In Suicide Squad #10 by Robbie Thompson, Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira, Dexter Soy, Marcelo Maiolo, Allen Passalaqua, and Wes Abbott, the superteam of villains look to find a way back to Earth from space. However, they end up being captured by Jo Mullein’s Green Lantern and end up in jail on Sciencell 0803. Match soon realizes getting captured was all part of Waller’s plan. Culebra ends up discovering the prison is also housing another villain, the Black Hand. The Black Lantern is wearing a mask that likely prevents him from using his powers. Although, he’s seen holding a skull – which he often wields when reanimating heroes as Black Lanterns during Black Night.

It turns out, Amanda Waller wanted the Suicide Squad to get captured, so she could get to Black Hand. As Waller puts it, with the undead villain on her side, “nothing” will be able to stop her. It’s another massive swing by Waller, who has gone to great lengths to assemble one of the most powerful Suicide Squads of all time.

It will be fascinating to see what powers Black Hand has and whether he’s still as strong as Waller believes. Regardless, bringing back the deadliest Black Lantern is bad news for the rest of the DC Universe, as Black Hand will likely become the newest recruit of the Suicide Squad. It’s clear Amanda Waller isn’t messing around.
