Gremlins TV Show Will Have Cameos From Original Movie Stars

The upcoming animated Gremlins series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, will have cameos from the original movie’s stars. The first film in the two film series arrived in 1984 and has since gone on to cult status – particularly during the Christmas season. The sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, arrived in 1990, though it failed to live up to the same standard that its predecessor and achieved.

None the less, the franchise drew in a substantial number of fans over the years, and for quite sometime after the first film debuted, Gremlins memorabilia was particularly popular, especially among children. This was due in no small part to the film’s cute and cuddly Mogwai, Gizmo. Perhaps it is because of this popularity that the upcoming animated Gremlins series will focus on the early days of Gizmo, back when he was under the care of Sam Wing, aka Grandfather in the original film. Wing sold selling Gizmo to Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton), who gave the gift to his son Billy (Zach Galligan) for Christmas. Fans of Gremlins, and in particular, those who are eager for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, have been waiting patiently for the new series to premiere on HBO Max. It was first announced over a year ago and has since been making steady strides, with a release date currently set for some time in 2021.

Now, thanks to Geek Vibes Nation, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai’s executive producer, Tze Chun has revealed that some of the original film’s stars will have cameos on the animated series. When asked if any actors from the original film might make an appearance, Chun had the following to say:

“There is definitely going to be some exciting cameos from people. What has been really exciting is that Joe Dante is a consulting producer on the project. He looks at scripts, he looks at the artwork. It’s been really amazing. And I know that a lot of people on the crew and the writers are huge huge Gremlin fans. So it has been really great.”

Chun also opened up in greater detail about what fans can expect from the series, which he says is “very serialized.” Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is a prequel of sorts, taking place in 1920s China. It will focus on Mr. Wing as a 10-year-old boy, as he navigates the challenges of being Gizmo’s keeper. Together, the pair will undertake a variety of adventures and will also encounter evil Mogwai along the way. In addition to this, Chun assured fans that Secrets of the Mogwai is set against a backdrop of Chinese mythology and that there will be plenty of Gremlins Easter eggs and Gremlins mythology mixed within the series’ plotlines.

It appears that there is much to be excited about for Gremlins fans with this upcoming series. However, at the same time, with its reliance on a story set in 1920’s China and a lead character that really didn’t factor much at all into the overall Gremlins story, it is very possible that Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai has an uphill battle before it. Over the years, Gremlins fans have been loud and clear that they want Gremlins 3. While that still might materialize, right now, it’s hard to see many of those fans being satisfied by this animated offering. Time will tell how HBO Max fares with this different take on the Gremlins mythology.
