Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

Grey’s Anatomy may be known for its high intense drama and extraordinary medical cases, but the one thing that continuously draws the fans in is the romances between the characters. Whether it is through Alex and Jo’s “enemies to lovers” trope or Mark and Lexie’s “star crossed lovers” one, viewers have thoroughly enjoyed watching the highs and lows of every relationship.

However, while there had been plenty of entertaining romances throughout the years, many fans will agree that the writers tend to focus on one relationship a season in order to help the characters grow and develop. So while Derek and Meredith will always be Grey’s Anatomy’s core love story, there were times where they were even overshadowed by the other beautiful and blossoming pairings.

Season 1: Derek & Meredith

Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

Although the first season of Grey’s Anatomy had only nine episodes, it only needed around two for some viewers to get attached to Meredith and Derek’s relationship. While it may have started as a one-night-stand, Meredith and Derek couldn’t stop themselves from being drawn to one another as they found out that they had a lot more in common than they initially thought.

However, what truly piqued the viewers’ interest in the couple was the shocking season finale, where it was revealed that Derek was married. That twist had fans talking for months, with many viewers anxious and excited to see how Meredith reacted to the news and what could now be in store for their future.

Season 2: Denny & Izzie

It may have been short-lived but Denny and Izzie’s relationship is still one of the most memorable romances on the show. Despite Katherine Heigl and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s chemistry, what really compelled the viewers to stick with their relationship was the fact that it affected every character’s arc in a major way.

This was particularly seen in the season 2 finale when Izzie put Alex, Cristina, George, and Meredith’s careers on the line after she cut Denny’s LVAD wire to save his life. Not only were the fans on the edge of their seats throughout this scandal as fans could feel the tension radiating off the characters, but they had also never seen Izzie act this reckless before either. After Denny died, fans knew that there would be major repercussions in store so fans looked forward to seeing whether Izzie would be able to keep practicing medicine or not.

Season 3: Cristina & Burke

While there were plenty of relationships that took Grey’s Anatomy fans by surprise in season 3, it was Cristina and Burke’s romance that stood out the most as it received the most development. Not only did the pair have some of the best storylines, including Burke’s hand scandal, but there was some excellent character development as they contemplated whether they were best suited for one another.

In the end, it certainly shocked fans to see Burke leave Cristina at the altar and that he had just left town without notice. However, since Burke did try to turn Cristina into someone that she wasn’t, they were kind of relieved that he had noticed that she didn’t want to get married and was now giving her a chance to get her happy ending.

Season 4: Derek & Meredith

After years of will-they-won’t-they and dating other people, Meredith and Derek ended up becoming the stars of the season when they finally decided that they actually wanted a future together.

While fans had been worried that the writers would make them fall back into repetitive patterns, they actually changed it up in season 4 by focusing on their working relationship and rebuilding the trust between them. Although fans did hate Derek and Rose’s short romance, there’s no doubt that it did help Meredith and Derek’s relationship in the long run since it helped them to become less indecisive and certain of what they wanted further down the line. Considering all the drama they were usually involved in, this made a nice change of pace.

Season 5: Alex & Izzie

There’s no doubt that Alex ended up having one of the best arcs on Grey’s Anatomy, significantly maturing as the seasons went on. While many factors were responsible for his tremendous character growth, one of the main reasons was because of Izzie’s faith in him.

Although they had failed to make their relationship work in the seasons prior, it was nice to see Alex and Izzie become more honest and open with each other so there were no more misunderstandings between them. There were certainly moments in the season where their relationship was tested, but, in the end, fans were pleased to see them work through them and get married in the end.

Season 6: Bailey & Ben

Considering that Tucker had put Bailey through the wringer during their marriage and made her feel guilty about working, many fans were delighted when she eventually struck up a romance with Ben. When the duo first met, they didn’t get along very well as they clashed over why a patient woke up during a procedure.

However, it didn’t take long for fans to see the spark between the two as they soon began to notice and appreciate each other’s talents. This was something that fans thoroughly enjoyed as it seemed like Bailey had finally found a partner who understood her and the pressures she faced with the job. It was also nice to see how they continued to push and challenge each other to be better, making them more complex characters overall.

Season 7: Callie & Arizona

Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

While many of the couples faced a lot of major obstacles in season 7, it was Callie and Arizona’s storyline that proved to be the most memorable. There’s no doubt that Callie and Arizona had a hard time as their relationship was tested in many ways.

From breakups to pregnancy revelations and car crashes, there was not one moment where fans weren’t thoroughly engaged with their arc as it was full of drama. However, if there was one highlight of the season, it had to be their wedding. Not only was it because they were taking a major step in their lives, but the joyous occasion emphasized that nothing would separate them again. After everything they had been put through, they deserved to be happy.

Season 8: Mark & Lexie

Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

Although they weren’t officially a couple, it was Mark and Lexie’s heartbreaking love story that stole the show in season 8 as it finally seemed like they were on the right page. For years, fans had the pleasure of watching Mark and Lexie’s love story blossom as the two grew as individuals together. Not only did Mark become more mature and responsible but Lexie also became less high-strung and confident when he was around too.

While they had been dating other people at the time, Lexie and Mark soon realized their feelings hadn’t dissipated as the spark between them was still present in their conversations. Sadly, the writers ended up breaking the viewers’ hearts once more when Mark and Lexie shortly died as a result of the plane crash. It really devastated them as Mark and Lexie were considered to be two of Grey’s Anatomy’s best characters.

Season 9: Derek & Meredith

Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

In the aftermath of Grey’s Anatomy’s shocking season 8 finale, nothing was the same for any of the characters as they had to process a lot of grief and trauma. This was particularly the case for Derek and Meredith, who found themselves deeply affected by the loss of Lexie and Mark, as well as their own injuries (such as Derek’s hand).

While Derek and Meredith usually pushed each other away during some of their toughest times, it did surprise fans to see them now actively communicating and supporting one another. There was also a lot more individual growth too as Meredith became more authoritative as she stepped into a leadership role while Derek started to focus on his teaching. They might not have had the most exciting storylines but it was still pleasurable nonetheless.

Season 10: April & Jackson

Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

After their surprising hook-up in season 8, fans watched as April and Jackson struggled to commit to one another due to their different views and beliefs. Fans were extremely frustrated when they began to date other people as they could see that April and Jackson had an unbreakable connection that wouldn’t be going away anytime soon.

However, this soon changed by the time season 10. In one of the biggest romantic gestures on Grey’s Anatomy, Jackson declared his love for April in front of their families and friends. While there was a small part where the viewers felt sympathetic towards Matthew and Stephanie, a large part of the fanbase were delighted that Jackson was no longer in denial and willing to fight for them.

Season 11: Alex & Jo

Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

After undergoing the “enemy to lover” trope in season 9, Alex and Jo’s romance was still going strong by season 11 as they were now living together and starting to think about their future. Not only were they succeeding in their careers but they seemed to understand each other on a level that no one else could.

It was quite refreshing to see that their relationship was steady and progressing at a healthy pace, particularly since Meredith and Derek, and Arizona and Callie were all having marital woes. Despite all the drama and chaos that enthused around them, fans were glad to have Alex and Jo’s scenes since they offered some relief.

Season 12: Owen & Amelia

Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

Although Owen and Amelia had been reluctant to open themselves up to love again, they ended up taking this leap of faith once more when they got to know one another. Ever since she permanently moved to Seattle, everyone had been comparing Amelia to Derek. However, what truly drew her to Owen was the fact that he was the only one willing to get to know her.

Eventually, their bond strengthened even more when Amelia and Owen began to confide in one another about their past relationships as well as their inner conflicts. Considering that both characters had been extremely cautious and hesitant when it came to dating, many viewers were kind of glad that the two seemed to be taking a chance on one another. While they did have to work out a few issues, they did appear to be quite happy together.

Season 13: Meredith & Nathan

Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

After viewers saw Meredith and Nathan give into their connection in season 12, the writers decided to spend most of season 13 exploring their relationship in more depth. Here, fans got to see Meredith and Nathan bond as they confided in one another about the grief they experienced after losing Derek and Megan and the similar dreams they had.

While it may have been short-lived, fans still thought it was quite memorable as it was the first relationship Meredith had been in since Derek’s death. It was also a significant part of each other’s arcs that fans enjoyed as it helped to teach Meredith and Nathan that it was okay to move on and love again.

Season 14: Alex & Jo

Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

After breaking up at the beginning of season 13, Alex and Jo took some time to focus on themselves as they had some personal issues they needed to work through. However, by the beginning of season 14, the two decided to give their relationship another go.

Many fans were quite happy to see them reunite as they appeared a lot more mature and wholesome. Unlike the first time, everyone was glad to see that Alex stopped taking Jo for granted as it led to some sweet and heartfelt moments (including the proposal and wedding). Considering the last few years hadn’t been easy on them, it was nice that they were getting some form of a happy ending.

Season 15: Meredith & DeLuca

Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

If there were two characters that fans wouldn’t expect to be paired together, it was DeLuca and Meredith (especially since they had barely interacted before). However, that’s not to say that the viewers didn’t enjoy it as they did have great chemistry and an interesting dynamic.

Not only did he get along well with her children but fans also enjoyed the little moments between them too (such as their work relationship and the exchanges where they spoke Italian to each other). It may not have been as epic as Meredith’s relationship with Derek, but it was just as memorable.

Season 16: Ben & Bailey

Greys Anatomy The Best Ship In Each Season

As the longest-running and healthiest relationship on the show, there’s no doubt that Ben and Bailey are the best couple on Grey’s Anatomy. While their relationship had been tested when Ben became a firefighter and Bailey had decided to foster a young teen without telling him, the couple has always been determined to work through their issues to make it work.

After all these years and all the changes, fans are happy that Bailey and Ben’s relationship has remained the one constant and steady element. Even though they have completely different and chaotic schedules, the viewers find it quite sweet that they always try to find time for one another and support each other in their endeavors. At this point, the show wouldn’t be the same without them.

Season 17: Winston & Maggie

Although Maggie hasn’t had the best of luck in the romance department, the fortune soon turned in her favor when she met Winston – a fellow cardiothoracic surgeon like her. Ever since viewers learned of their history, it wasn’t hard for fans to root for the couple as their fairytale-like romance had viewers gripped from the beginning.

Not only has Winston helped Maggie to be more spontaneous and relaxed but they seem to complement each other well. Fans also loved the fact that Winston has been so understanding of Maggie’s beliefs and hasn’t tried to change her into something she wasn’t. After all these years, fans are glad that Maggie and Winston have got their happy ending.
