On the eve of Rockstar Games’ launch of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, leaked gameplay footage has surfaced online. Rockstar and publisher Take-Two unveiled the GTA Trilogy approximately four weeks ago, just in time for Grand Theft Auto III’s 20th anniversary. The brand-new collection is coming to all modern platforms, including Nintendo Switch, and boasts enhanced graphics that remain a point of contention amongst hopeful players.

Even more contentious are the limited details that have surfaced since the collection’s official announcement last month. Barring the original reveal trailer and a series of GIFs, Rockstar Games hasn’t made rolling out extensive gameplay footage much of a priority. The studio’s silence on the matter continues to raise questions about the quality of the remasters for GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. But newly leaked gameplay means fans need not wonder any longer.

The first extensive gameplay footage since GTA Trilogy’s divisive announcement trailer is now making the rounds online, thanks to Twitch streamers and YouTubers who managed to get their hands on the remasters early. As noted by The Verge, the new videos showcase how each of the games actually run on modern hardware and offer a closer look at some of the GTA V-inspired mechanics. A Vice City-centric stream from YouTuber okayjosh, for instance, showed off melee combat, an updated weapon wheel, and gunplay. The same YouTuber also shared footage from GTA III, highlighting the driving mechanics and on-foot exploration. Over on Reddit, user Zombathaon67890 uploaded off-screen gameplay of CJ roaming the streets of San Andreas.

As seen in previously released GTA Trilogy screenshots, the graphics for GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas have undergone quite the overhaul. But the above videos show that quite a few of the visual and gameplay quirks from the PS2-era remain intact. The jumping still appears very floaty, for instance, and the rag doll physics don’t seem to bear much in the way of heft, either. While gunplay looks refined, there are still aspects that that don’t appear to have aged all that well. It puts into perspective Rockstar’s previous promise to remain faithful to the original releases.

Shortly after announcing the GTA Trilogy, Rockstar and Take-Two removed the classic titles from digital storefronts such as the PlayStation Store. The GTA Trilogy’s PS2 versions are no longer available for sale, then, meaning the new releases now count as the only way to purchase these seminal experiences on modern platforms.
