Greys Anatomy Why April & Owen Arent Real Friends

As of Season 16, Owen Hunt is one of the longest running characters in Grey’s Anatomy. He joined the medical drama way back in its fifth season and has been part of the main cast ever since, clocking up a impressive 11 plus seasons. However, Owen can be temperamental, and can sometimes drive people away.

April Kepner made her Grey’s Anatomy debut in Season 6, as one of the residents transferred from Mercy West. However, she was shortly fired, only to be rehired again later that same season. These two surgeons could be quite difficult to like so we’ve listed why April and Owen aren’t really friends.

10 Owen Was April’s Boss

In Season 7, Meredith Grey tampered with Derek Shepherd’s medical trial which focused on trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. Richard Webber, then Chief of Surgery, took the blame for Meredith, resigning as Chief in the process. Richard then appointed Owen as his successor.

Owen was surprisingly adept at being Chief, as he was fair but tough, and stood by the decisions he made. However, being Chief meant that the staff and his former friends saw him differently, as he was now their boss. Any good friendship needs to be. or a least feel like both participants are on equal footing.

9 April Was Friends With Nathan Riggs

After April gave birth to baby Samuel, who died shortly after birth, she needed to get away from her old life. Therefore, with the help of Owen, she joined the army as a medic. She enjoyed the experience so much that she went a second time, and it was then that she met Nathan Riggs.

The two soon became incredibly close and so when Riggs arrived as a new cardio attending at Grey Sloan Memorial, April was thrilled. However, Riggs’s dodgy past soon came to light but instead of respecting Owen and breaking off their friendship, April continued to remain close to Riggs.

8 Owen Holds Grudges

One of the worst things about Owen is that he views the world as black and white. This leads to him coming across as slightly ignorant on occasion and, particularly in recent seasons, leads to him holding a grudge or two.

Owen and Riggs were best friends, until Riggs cheated on Owen’s sister and indirectly caused her ‘death’. Owen never forgave him and when Riggs came to work at the hospital, Owen was deeply unpleasant towards him. This must have made things awkward for April, who was close to Riggs. Good friends shouldn’t pressure each other to like or dislike someone.

7 Owen Fired April

Let’s be honest, when April first appeared on Grey’s Anatomy, she wasn’t the most competent or likeable doctor in the cast. She was first fired in Season 6 when a patient died due to a mistake that April made. It was extremely chaotic and so Derek decided to give her another chance.

April began to get her act together somewhat, and by Season 8, she had become Chief Resident, much to everyone else’s irritation. However, she began to panic when her boards approached, causing her to fail them. Because of this, Owen fired her, stating that he needed a board certified trauma surgeon.

6 Owen Caused April To Have A Minor Breakdown

In Season 7, Owen was given funding by Richard to train the residents on how to deal with trauma cases while under duress. This was a direct result of the hospital shooting that had occurred in the Season 6 finale, which had led to many deaths and many doctors developing PTSD.

While Owen’s heart was in the right place by wanting to train the residents to save more lives, he did go about training them in a rather brutal way. By the end of the first training session, April had had enough and so she commandeered an ambulance, screamed at Owen and was genuinely quite scary.

5 Owen Didn’t Notice When April Was Hurting

Since her introduction in Season 6, April has been through a lot during her time on Grey’s Anatomy. We’ve already talked about her losing her child but in the fourteenth season, April also lost her faith. April was the trauma surgeon responsible for Paul Stadler, as well as her ex’s pregnant wife.

Both Paul and Matthew’s wife died of unforeseen complications and unfortunately, a boy who died as a result of a police shooting affected April as well. Unable to handle all that death, most of which could have easily been avoided, April lost her faith in God and Owen didn’t even realise.

4 They Never Hung Out Together

The great thing about friends is that you feel comfortable around them. You never get bored of their company and they’re always there for you when you need to have a good moan. Unfortunately, April and Owen never had that kind of friendship.

Whereas Owen hung out with the likes of Callie Torres, Derek and Teddy Altman, he never really socialized with the residents. April was the same; she went for drinks with Meredith, Alex Karev and Lexie Grey but never Owen. Come to think of it, it would have been weird to see Owen and April have drinks together because they’re not that type of friends.

3 April Was Very Annoying

As previously stated, April was not the most likeable character when she first appeared. She was extremely irritating and grating. April was obviously very intelligent, but she used her knowledge to make other doctors look incompetent, most notably Lexie.

She also formed attachments very easily, quickly developing a crush on Derek, who was with Meredith at the time. Her attitude was also fairly obnoxious, as were the rest of the Mercy West residents. No wonder Owen barely made time for her. Friendships mainly work if you’re easy going and relatable.

2 They Never Truly Interacted With Each Other

We’ve discussed how April and Owen never met up outside of the hospital. However, they didn’t really speak to each other much at work either. This wasn’t because they actively disliked each other; they were colleagues and they admired and respected each other.

However, they never really joked around. All their communications seemed to be work related. Owen would tell April where to go and who to see first, and April would really only speak to Owen to ask him a question related to a patient. There was no banter that indicated these two were close.

1 They Were Never Really Ever Close

Probably the biggest reason why April and Owen aren’t really friends is because they literally were never friends. The show never felt the need to push them together, or give them a beautiful friendship. April and Owen were happy as just colleagues; they got on well and there was rarely any drama between them.

Even the people close to April and Owen didn’t really have any connection to the other. April’s best friend was Jackson, and he was close to Mark Sloan, not Owen. Likewise, Teddy is Owen’s best friend and she got on way better with Cristina than April, and Cristina was dating Owen at the time!
