Nicolas Cage is one of the most fascinating actors to ever appear in films. He is a bold and fearless performer who is capable of giving tremendous performances in a variety of films like Leaving Las Vegas, The Rock, and Adaptation. However, he is also not very picky with his roles, which means he has appeared in more than a few questionable films.
Though he has won the acclaim of critics for several of her performances, he has also experienced the wrath of critics with some of his less-celebrated work. Here are Nicolas Cage’s worst movies, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
10 Trapped In Paradise (10%)
Though he can be very funny, Cage doesn’t often get the chance to do full-blown comedies. Judging by the reception of Trapped in Paradise, there might be a good reason for that. Cage costars with Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz as bank robber brothers who get stuck in a charming town they just robbed on Christmas Eve.
Despite the talent of those involved, the movie was called unwatchable by many critics. The jokes fell flat, the chemistry didn’t work and the story was stretched far too thin.
9 Pay The Ghost (10%)
Cage ventured into the supernatural horror genre for this forgettable 2015 film. In Pay the Ghost, Cage plays a professor and family man whose young son goes missing during a Halloween carnival. Consumed with guilt, he tirelessly searches for the boy and uncovers a forgotten mystery that could hold the key.
Critics were left shaken by the film but in all the wrong ways. They criticized the weak horror elements of the film that left the viewers more bored than scared. Ultimately it was dismissed as an uninspired mess.
8 Fire Birds (10%)
While it’s usually Cage’s more recent offerings that just torn apart by critics, he does have some stinkers from earlier in his career. Fire Birds stars Cage as a hotshot combat helicopter who struggles with his disapproving superior officer (Tommy Lee Jones) and his love affair with a female pilot (Sean Young).
The movie came out a few years after Top Gun and is widely regarded as a poor knockoff of that film. With lazy action and lame political messages, even the talented stars couldn’t save this turkey in the minds of critics.
7 Dying Of The Light (8%)
You would think that the combined talents of Cage and director Paul Schrader would have resulted in a more interesting movie than Dying of the Light. Cage plays a CIA official who, after discovering he has a devastating medical condition, goes rogue to find the terrorist who tortured him years earlier.
The talents of those involved were hard for the critics to see with this dull procedural. The unimaginative thriller failed to raise many pulses and left many critics yawning instead.
6 Bangkok Dangerous (8%)
Bangkok Dangerous seemed to be the film that launched Cage’s more recent career direction heading away from Hollywood blockbusters and towards cheap VOD action movies. Cage plays a lonely, yet deadly, assassin hired for a job in Bangkok. He soon finds himself in danger when he forms an unlikely bond with a local woman.
Cage can usually be counted on to at least deliver an interesting performance, but most critics agreed this one was rather wooden. They also complained that the movie doesn’t add anything new to the familiar story and the dull action doesn’t make it much fun either.
5 Outcast (5%)
You do have to give Cage credit; he isn’t afraid of exploring just about any genre. In Outcast, he tries his hand at a medieval action-adventure while playing second-fiddle to Hayden Christensen. The two actors play warriors who join forces to protect a young boy from a cruel emperor who wants him dead.
Seeing Cage ham it up as a legendary outlaw in a medieval adventure should at least make for some goofy fun, but critics lamented that the film couldn’t even deliver on that. Instead, Outcast was called an unforgivably dull adventure.
4 211 (5%)
Cage is no stranger to playing a cop, but he usually does so in more interesting projects than 211. The film is allegedly real events and finds Cage as a veteran cop on the verge of retirement who finds himself pinned down along with his partner and a civilian boy in a shootout with heavily armed thieves.
If the premise sounds a little familiar, most critics agreed. They blasted the movie for being little more than a collection of tired action movie clichés strung together with uninspired set pieces thrown in.
3 Arsenal (3%)
Cage can be pretty fun in a villain role, but unfortunately his role in Arsenal didn’t offer much chance for him to have fun. The film stars Adrian Grenier as a man who is forced to operate outside of the law when his brother gets mixed up with a ruthless drug dealer (Cage).
Even with a ridiculous wig and fake nose, Cage looks mostly bored in the bad guy role. His occasionally unhinged performance proves to be the only thing worth watching in this forgettable crime slog.
2 Left Behind (1%)
Left Behind is an apocalyptic thriller based on the best-selling novel of the same name. The film tells the story of the chaos that ensues after millions of people all over the world suddenly vanish without explanation. Cage plays a pilot who is left behind after the strange occurrence.
Despite the potential of the premise, the film inexplicably manages to be nothing more than a plodding and boring drab. Cage fails to deliver any kind of interesting performance and the small scale of the film makes it far less than thrilling. It seems like a poor excuse to jam religious messaging down the viewers’ throats.
1 Deadfall (0%)
When Cage decides to go completely unhinged, it can really be something to see. Unfortunately, he sometimes picks really awful movies to chew the scenery in. Deadfall is a stale crime film about a young man who takes a job with a crime boss and has to contend with his paranoid and insane partner in crime (Cage).
It’s hard to deny that Cage’s wild performance is entertaining, but the rest of the movie can’t catch up. It seems like they realized this predicament in the editing room and tried to shape the whole thing around Cage’s performance, but the result is just a big uninteresting mess.
