Half-Life: Alyx Ending Explained – How The Twist Retcons [SPOILER]

Half-Life: Alyx has some big twists and implications for the series going forward, but the ending deserves a bit of explanation.

Half-Life: Alyx is the first Half-Life game in nearly thirteen years, and Valve has certainly kept fans waiting for the next story development. Alyx is a showcase for the potential of VR, and easily one of the best uses of the technology yet.

Unlike past games in the series, players don’t take control of the iconic scientist Gordon Freeman, instead taking on the role of Alyx Vance. Half-Life: Alyx takes place in between the events of the first and second games.

Even though it takes place in the past, Half-Life: Alyx has some serious implications for the future of the franchise. There are a surprising amount of twists and revelations, so here’s the ending of Half-Life: Alyx explained. Again, there are massive spoilers ahead.

The Fate of G-Man In Half-Life: Alyx

The majority of Half-Life: Alyx sees Alyx and her father, Eli, trying to form the resistance to fight the Combine. During this time there’s a massive vault ominously hanging over City 17, for unknown reasons. Despite thinking it houses a superweapon, partway through the game Alyx and Eli learn that the Vault houses someone that survived the Black Mesa incident. The pair presume that the subject in question is Gordon Freeman, and they hatch a plan to save him from the Combine.

When Alyx arrives at the vault it’s clear things aren’t quite right, as the building houses a strange simulation of City 17. Trapped in the cell at the center of the Vault Alyx finds the mysterious G-Man, the seemingly supernatural entity that spoke to Gordon Freeman throughout the series. G-Man works for unknown entities, and “recruits” people to change the course of history. G-Man can travel through and affect space and time, and Alyx doesn’t make it quite clear when he was captured by the Combine. With G-Man saved, he gives Alyx a tantalizing offer.

How Half-Life: Alyx Retcons Episode 2

G-Man tells Alyx that his previous hire has rebelled, meaning how Gordon Freeman broke off from the deal the two of them made. He’s chosen Alyx as Gordon’s replacement, and originally Alyx wants to use the deal to get rid of the Combine.

According to G-Man, that’s too much of a change to reality, and instead, he tells her about Eli’s death at the end of Half-Life 2: Episode 2. G-Man takes Alyx forward in time where she kills the Combine Advisor and saves Eli, completely retconning the ending of the original game. At this point, G-Man puts her in stasis until a time that she’s needed again. Eli, of course, is furious at this. This is a huge change to the timeline of Half-Life, and seemingly resolves the cliffhanger of Episode 2 that fans have agonized over for years. There’s one final scene in Alyx’s ending that helps set the stage for wherever Half-Life goes next.

How Half-Life: Alyx Sets the Stage For the Next Game

The final scene of Half-Life: Alyx is the exact opposite of Episode 2, with Eli and Gordon realizing what just happened to Alyx. At this point, Dog bursts into the room and gives a crowbar to Eli who, of course, hands the iconic weapon to Gordon. This entire scene is through the eyes of Gordon, unlike the rest of the game which is played from the perspective of Alyx. It seems likely the next Half-Life will star Gordon again, with the trio seeking to free Alyx from G-Man’s control. It seems clear that Valve intended Half-Life: Alyx as a bridge to wherever the series goes next, whether that’s what was originally planned or something new.

In 2017 Marc Laidlaw, a former writer at Valve, laid out the original plan for Half-Life 3: Episode 3. This story had Gordon and Alyx traveling to a frigid tundra to the Borealis research facility. Essentially the facility has become unstuck in time and they plan to use it to destroy Combine headquarters. Obviously, this is a bit different considering now Alyx is captured by G-Man. No matter what, Half-Life: Alyx is laying the foundation for the next step in the franchise.
