Harley Quinn: The Animated Series has officially completed its first audio mix for Season 3.

Showrunner Patrick Schumacker shared the production update on Twitter, confirming that HBO Max’s Harley Quinn series had “just finished the first audio mix” for the upcoming third season. “Call your friends!” he wrote. “It’s happening! It’s happeniiiiiiiiing!”

Schumacker revealed in February 2021 that recording had officially begun on Season 3 of the HBO Max animated series. A first look at Season 3 was unveiled a few months later during DC FanDome 2021, which included voice-over and unfinished animation, as well as a full-color look at Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.

In a 2020 interview, Schumacker and co-showrunner Justin Halpern explained that Season 3 would focus on toxic relationships and deal heavily with Harley and Ivy’s newfound romance. “That’s the big thing for us to chew on,” Halpern said at the time. “The thing we have discussed preliminarily is the idea that these two characters have had a lot of toxic relationships in their past. Although Ivy and Kite Man wasn’t toxic, it also wasn’t an equal relationship, you know? He loved her a lot more than she loved him.”

According to Halpern, Harley and Ivy will “have a lot of responsibility” in Season 3 in terms of their relationship. “So this is the first time they’re both going to be in a relationship where they really and truly have affection towards one another,” he said. “So I think like, ‘what is it like to be in a good relationship after you’ve only ever been in bad relationships with abusive people?’ is a big theme we want to play with.”

Developed by Schumacker, Halpern and Dean Lorey, Harley Quinn: The Animated Series stars Kaley Cuoco as Harley Quinn and Lake Bell as Poison Ivy. The first two seasons of Harley Quinn originally premiered on the DC Universe streaming service. However, amid the restructuring of DC Universe, both seasons were added to HBO Max in August of 2020. Soon after, it was announced that Season 3 would premiere exclusively on HBO Max.

The series also released a six-issue tie-in comic titled Harley Quinn: The Animated Series – The Eat. Bang! Kill. Tour, meant to fill the gap between Season 2 and 3. Written by Tee Franklin, drawn by Max Sarin, colored by Marissa Louise, and lettering by Taylor Esposito, the comic follows Harley and Poison Ivy on the road trip of a lifetime after the show’s climactic Season 2 finale.

Season 3 of Harley Quinn does not yet have a release date.
