Harry Potter 10 Characters Who Could Have Been Professional Quidditch Players (But Chose A Different Career)

During our time with the Harry Potter series, we got to know several different students who played Quidditch. Though arguably we got to know the Gryffindor team the best, there were plenty of named students who were also players for their team.

Surprisingly, most of the students we met did not move on to professional teams. Given the focus some of these students put on their teams, you’d think that most of them would be planning on moving forward with their passion. After all, we see that happen all the time in the muggle world. Yet the following ten characters did not opt to follow up their time at Hogwarts with any attempt at going pro.

10 George Weasley

It’ll probably come as no surprise to see most of this list is comprised of Weasley family members. After all, almost every one of them ended up on the Gryffindor team at some point, and from the sounds of it, they were all pretty talented.

George Weasley was a beater during his days at Hogwarts – and a darn good one too. He worked well with his brother, Fred, but it was more than just that. He was a true team player – and always put the safety of others above all else. Granted, his whole business with Fred was going too smooth for him to ever really consider doing anything else.

9 Fred Weasley

And of course, you can’t include George Weasley on a list and leave his brother, Fred, off of it. Fred Weasley. We know, we know. Fred died during the Battle of Hogwarts, so he didn’t get much of a chance to try and go pro. But he never once mentioned any interest in doing so.

Fred, like his brother, George, was an excellent beater. These two teamed up and worked flawlessly together. Frankly, it’s a shame that they didn’t go on to the professional side of Quidditch. Then again, Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes did pretty well for itself, didn’t it?

8 Charlie Weasley

While we’re listing out the Weasleys, let’s talk about Charlie. He was on the team before Harry ever got to Hogwarts, but it still sounds like he was a skilled member of the team. Actually, that’s a bit of an understatement.

Charlie played two vital roles during his time as a Quidditch player at Hogwarts. First, he was a Seeker – just like Harry and Ginny. Second, he was the team captain. That says an awful lot about his skills and ability to lead, don’t you think? However, we all know that Charlie had a different – and much more dangerous – passion. Charlie went on to work with dragons. Playing professional Quidditch would have arguably been a lot safer. But that’s not saying all that much.

7 Alicia Spinnet

Alicia Spinnet was the Chaser of the Gryffindor team during Harry’s stay at school. And in case you’re noticing a trend; yes this list is going to include a lot of Gryffindor players. They’re the ones we got to know the best, and thus have the best idea of whether or not they could have gone pro.

Admittedly, when Alicia tried out she only made it into the reserve position – but Lee Jordan mentioned how impressed he was with her, which we feel like is saying something. That kid was not afraid to speak his mind. We do know that she seemed to get progressively better throughout her Hogwarts Quidditch career. There actually isn’t a ton known about Alicia following her Hogwarts days. We know she survived the Battle of Hogwarts (presumably, as she is not listed among the dead), but nothing else was mentioned. We feel like Harry would have made note of her moving up in the world of Quidditch though, the boy is a bit obsessed with the sport.

6 Katie Bell

Katie Bell is another member of the Gryffindor Quidditch team who could have potentially gone pro, had she so desired. We know that her time being cursed (which she spent months in Saint Mungos for) really put her plans back a step or two, however.

It forced her to retake her final year, and who knows what it did to her Quidditch career. Katie Bell was a Chaser, and to quote Hagrid here, she was a thumpin’ good one at that. When she was forced to leave Hogwarts (you know, because of the curse) her fellow teammates felt her loss.

5 Cedric Diggory

We know it hurts to mention this one, but Cedric Diggory is making our list. Who knows if he was planning on going pro, had he lived long enough to graduate from Hogwarts and aim for something bigger.

We do know that any potential career was stopped as early as his life. Sorry, low blow. You’ve got to admit though, Cedric was a talented Seeker. Anybody capable of rivaling Harry (the youngest Seeker in a century) had to be.

4 Cho Chang

While we’re mentioning Harry’s rival Seekers, let’s talk about Cho Chang. She was the Seeker for Ravenclaw, and while she might not have had the same skills as Harry, she was still quite talented. She knew how to use her skills to their best advantage – such as body blocking Harry (knowing full well that her broom could never beat his).

Honestly, it’s a bit of a shame that Cho didn’t end up going pro, in the end. It could have been the confidence boost she needed in life. Then again, it was all just a painful reminder for her, in the end. Perhaps that’s why she choose another avenue in life.

3 Cormac McLaggen

Cormac McLaggen may be a bit of a jerk (and a little obsessed with snogging), but you’ve got to admit that the guy is a talented Quidditch player. He played Keeper whenever Ron couldn’t, and he was a talented player and flier.

We know that Cormac was especially talented with flying. And while Ron ended up beating him for the position Cormac was arguably more consistent with his playing. For better or for worse, that is. The real problem with Cormac is the fact that he seems to think he could be a one-man team. Perhaps that’s the reason he never moved on professionally – no team wanted him.

2 Angelina Johnson

Angelina Johnson was yet another member of the Gryffindor Quidditch team who didn’t go to a professional team – though she certainly could have done so. Angelina was a Chaser for the team, and later, when Wood graduated, she became the Captain as well.

That’s why her decision to not follow Wood’s career path is so surprising. She could have done it, too.

1 Professor McGonagall

And let us not forget Minerva McGonagall. She was a quidditch player back in the day, as hard as that might be to believe. That is one of the many reasons why she is so passionate about Gryffindor’s team (the other bit is that she enjoyed beating Snape in a competition).

From the sounds of it, McGonagall was actually considering going pro, until one fateful match. During the match to declare the winner of the Quidditch House Cup, McGonagall had a nasty fall. And the injuries she sustained there essentially ended her career. And yes, this incident did also create her desire to see the Slytherins lose as often as possible – as it was their team she was up against. Feel free to speculate about foul play, if you so desire. We’re sure plenty of other people have wondered as well.
