Lupin and Tonks’s relationship was always a little divisive, and fans believed he’d be better paired with Sirius. Here’s how these couples compare.

While the Harry Potter books might not have been romance stories, they did incorporate many relationships, and lots of fans enjoy shipping characters together. Fans have been interested in the lives and stories of the Marauders for many years and characters such as Lupin and Sirius have always been fan-favorites.

Of all the relationships featured in the series, the one between Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks is somewhat divisive. While some fans find it believable and a tragic love story, others felt it didn’t make a lot of sense and came out of nowhere. And, even though it was never canon, there are many fans who think Lupin and Sirius should have been together.

10 Tonks: Lupin really fell for Tonks

While we don’t get to see a lot of this relationship in the books since the story is told from Harry’s perspective, the information given on Pottermore gives some insight into their love story. The site explained that Lupin was very smitten with Tonks right away and fell for her hard.

He didn’t think someone like her could love someone like him, but because they were both in the Order of the Phoenix they got to know one another.

9 Sirius: It would have been great representation that would have fit the plot

One big criticism fans have of the series is that there isn’t any canon LGBT+ representation. Given J.K. Rowling’s anti-transgender stance, this has been especially troubling to many.

While Dumbledore might have been confirmed to be gay, it wasn’t in the books, and many feel this wasn’t a positive representation. Sirius and Lupin being together would have been an easy way to include this representation while not having to change anything that was central to the plot.

8 Tonks: She didn’t care that Lupin was a werewolf

While Lupin had a lot of worries about how Tonks would perceive him, which makes sense given the prejudice against werewolves in the wizarding world, Tonks never saw him as less than. She didn’t care that he was a werewolf, and she was always going to defend him.

Of course, Sirius didn’t care that Lupin was a werewolf either, and he was one of the first people in Lupin’s life to be there for him.

7 Sirius: They knew each other for years and were close friends

One of the strongest arguments for a Lupin and Sirius romantic relationship is that they were really close friends for years. They were friends all through their time at Hogwarts and also into young adulthood until the tragic murder of the Potters by Voldemort.

Then, once Lupin learned the truth, he was there to help his friend once again. These two knew each other extremely well, and it would have been a natural thing if that relationship had become romantic as this often happens in real life.

6 Tonks: Because Tonks had a personality that could balance Lupin’s

One of the only reasons Lupin and Sirius might not work as a couple as they both tend to be more pessimistic. This doesn’t mean they would have been bad for each other, but Tonks and Lupin have a bit more of a balance when it comes to personality.

Tonks was a fairly positive and upbeat person who was able to see things in a less dreary way than Lupin did.

5 Sirius: They have a natural connection and chemistry

It’s hard to completely speak on the chemistry between Lupin and Sirius or Lupin and Tonks because we don’t see a ton of these interactions.

However, Lupin and Sirius have an easy way of interacting with one another, and they especially seem to have a good connection in chemistry in the film version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Plus, they didn’t have a large age gap like Lupin and Tonks, and they had a lot of shared life experience.

4 Tonks: Tonks was able to provide a fresh start on life

Tonks was an Auror, so she was definitely a strong person who faced a lot of difficult situations. However, her overall outlook on life was pretty positive, and she didn’t seem as downtrodden by the world as Lupin or Sirius.

This means she would have been able to provide a new way of looking at things as well as somewhat of a fresh start. Plus, Sirius was still considered a criminal for a crime he didn’t commit, so it would have been difficult for Lupin and Sirius to have any sort of normalcy.

3 Sirius: Because the Tonks and Lupin relationship felt forced and unhealthy

Many fans felt that this relationship seems to come out of nowhere. It didn’t really need to happen for the plot, and it seemed like it didn’t make a ton of sense for either of these characters. The biggest reason they don’t seem like a good match is that the relationship seems to make them both miserable.

Lupin had so much guilt over making Tonks’ life harder that he actually just made her depressed. She wasn’t her happy self anymore, and her Patronus even changed which seems extreme and strange. Lupin also had so many issues over the relationship that he tried to abandon Tonks while she was pregnant with their child.

2 Tonks: It’s what happens in canon

The main argument for this pairing is that it’s what happened in the canon. There are two camps in fandom when it comes to canon as some people feel it’s important and the final say while others think it’s the author’s interpretation and authors can make poor choices because of their own biases.

So, whether or not it was the best choice for the characters is up for debate, but it is what happened in the books.

1 Sirius: These two clearly care about each other a lot

Sirius and Lupin care about each other a lot because they’ve known each other for so long. Sirius, and James, were there for Lupin when he had really no one, and they changed his life for the better.

Lupin was also there to defend Sirius and was loyal to him once he realized Sirius hadn’t been the one to betray the Potters. Their relationship had a lot of potential, and at the very least, it would have been great to see more about them even as friends.
