Of all the Hogwarts houses in Harry Potter, Hufflepuff is probably the most underappreciated and undervalued. It’s a shame as Hufflepuffs embody admirable traits like loyalty, hard work, dedication, and fairness. Some of the finest witches and wizards have been Hufflepuffs, with many of them proving to be quite powerful, even going on to shape the magical world in significant ways. Of course, not all Hufflepuffs were extraordinary, let alone powerful.

10 Worst: Zacharias Smith

Zacharias Smith not only had a terrible attitude, but he wasn’t very good at magic either. In Dumbledore’s Army he struggled to cast a Disarming Charm, a feat most of the other members were able to accomplish.

When the time to be brave and do the right thing came, Smith failed miserably as during the Battle of Hogwarts he fled rather than staying to fight, even knocking over some first-years so he could escape. In terms of both his power as a spellcaster and the power of loyalty or helping others, Smith is one of the worst to ever come out of Hufflepuff.

9 Most Powerful: Cedric Diggory

Cedric Diggory was one of the first Hufflepuffs who fans actually got to know well. He became Seeker of the Hufflepuff Quidditch team and a Prefect, but his true power shined through as a champion during the Triwizard Tournament. Through clever transfiguration, he was the first to trick a dragon and get the golden egg during the first task. He cast a successful Bubble-Head Charm that allowed him to breathe underwater and save Cho Chang during the second task.

He overcame a Blast-Ended Skrewt and, with Harry’s help, an Imperiused Viktor Krum and an Acromantula in the third task, all of which allowed him and Harry to reach the Triwizard Cup. Unfortunately, he was killed soon after by Peter Pettigrew on Voldemort’s orders. In his lifetime, Cedric demonstrated impressive power for one so young and would’ve likely become even more accomplished had his life not been tragically cut short.

8 Worst: Silvanus Kettleburn

As Professor of Care of Magical Creatures, Silvanus Kettleburn was Rubeus Hagrid’s predecessor. Hagrid’s recklessness pales in comparison to that of Kettleburn, who lost all his limbs except an arm and half of one leg on the job. Kettleburn frequently needed to go to the Hospital Wing and be treated by Madam Pomfrey due to the numerous creature-induced injuries he sustained.

His struggles sometimes threatened the Hogwarts student body and even the magical creatures under his care. Incidents included a worm he offered for a school play exploding and starting a fire, allowing a Chimaera to get loose, and failing to prevent Fred and George Weasley from stealing a salamander who they fed fireworks.

7 Most Powerful: Theseus Scamander

Hufflepuffs are not often thought of as “brave,” but Theseus Scamander defied these expectations by becoming a war hero. He helped Muggles during the First World War and is still recognized as a war hero nearly a decade after the conflict ended. Theseus became Head of the Auror Office at the British Ministry of Magic, a feat that only goes to the most accomplished of Aurors.

He was also considered powerful enough to lead the hunt for Gellert Grindelwald. In The Crimes of Grindelwald, he held his own against the evil wizard and helped put out the blue fire that could’ve consumed Paris. As the Fantastic Beasts film series continues, audiences will likely see Theseus as an even more powerful wizard.

6 Worst: Justin Finch-Fletchley

Justin Finch-Fletchley admitted that he wasn’t particularly brave. He failed to perform a successful Disarming Charm against Neville Longbottom in Dueling Club. He struggled to think for himself as well, believing that Gilderoy Lockhart was a great wizard and that Harry was the Heir of Slytherin, despite the fact that there was a great deal of evidence to the contrary in both cases. He also showed poor judgment by walking around Hogwarts alone despite all the attacks against Muggle-born students, during which he was petrified.

By the time Justin joined Dumbledore’s Army in his fifth year, though, he’d come a long way. He’d formed his own opinions, which led him to become part of Dumbledore’s Army. Unlike in Dueling Club a few years earlier, in Dumbledore’s Army, he learned the spells that were taught and was able to successfully apply them.

5 Most Powerful: Pomona Sprout

Professor Pomona Sprout used her talents as a witch and as a Herbologist to actively defy Voldemort and his evil. She grew Mandrakes that were used to cure those who were petrified by the Basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets. Several years later when Professor McGonagall dueled Severus Snape, Professor Sprout helped McGonagall drive him out of Hogwarts.

With the help of some students during the Battle of Hogwarts, she led an attack where they would drop dangerous plants onto the Death Eaters, which was actually effective at incapacitating many of them. She treated the wounded from the Battle of Hogwarts as well. With many gifts under her belt, Professor Sprout is the embodiment of a powerful and underrated Hufflepuff.

4 Worst: The Fat Friar

The Fat Friar is a true Hufflepuff, who in life and as a ghost was always eager to help others and be kind. In life, he used his magic to cure peasants of the pox, and as a ghost, he was willing to forgive the troublesome Peeves and give him a second chance when none of the other Hogwarts ghosts would do so.

Undeniably generous and forgiving, the Friar is not a very powerful wizard, though, as he couldn’t save himself from Muggle senior churchmen, who executed him because of his ability to seemingly cure the pox by poking peasants with a stick, not to mention his habit of pulling rabbits out of the communion cup. A more powerful wizard would not be foolish enough to perform magic so blatantly before Muggles, and worse so to be executed by them.

3 Most Powerful: Nymphadora Tonks

As an Auror and devoted member of the Order of the Phoenix, Tonks demonstrated her power many times. Under the tutelage of Mad-Eye Moody, she became one of the youngest individuals to ever become an Auror. Few witches or wizards could best Tonks in a duel, something that many Death Eaters discovered when they faced her in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, the Battle of the Seven Potters, and the Battle of Hogwarts.

As a Metamorphmagus, Tonks also possessed the rare ability to change her appearance at will. This helped her perform vital undercover work as both an Auror and as a member of the Order of the Phoenix.

2 Worst: Summers

Summers is a character only mentioned in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but that’s all the time he needed to make a fool out of himself. Like many other Hogwarts students, he wanted to enter his name into the Triwizard Tournament. Regardless of the fact he was underage, Summers crossed the Age Line protecting the Goblet of Fire and submitted his name.

The Age Line did its job and made his attempt a failure. Summers landed in the Hospital Wing with a white beard for his trouble. A Hogwarts champion did come from Hufflepuff in the form of Cedric Diggory, who unlike Summers was of age and could properly enter his name into the Triwizard Tournament.

1 Most Powerful: Newt Scamander

Magical creatures are naturally a major part of the magical world, and no one understands them as well as Newt Scamander. That knowledge makes him powerful as he educates others on how to coexist with the creatures, peacefully controlling and helping them as needed. From Nifflers and Bowtruckles to the more fearsome likes of Zouwus and even Obscurials, Newt almost always knows what’s best for them.

There’s more to Newt’s power than his connection with magical creatures, evidenced when the evil Gellert Grindelwald threatened the United States and the entire magical world in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt was the one most integral to stopping Grindelwald and unmasking his disguise. His power continued into the film’s sequel, as he ensured a Niffler stole the vial holding the blood pact Grindelwald made with Albus Dumbledore, the destruction of which will allow Dumbledore to eventually confront Grindelwald in their final duel.
