Hawkeye Being A Christmas Story Can Outdo Iron Man 3

Marvel’s upcoming Hawkeye TV series is set to be a Christmas story, and that gives it a chance to outdo Iron Man 3. The trailer for Hawkeye makes it clear that, as well as mentoring Kate Bishop and trying to survive retribution for his actions during the Blip, Clint Barton will spend the series trying to get home to his family in time for Christmas. It is unclear how the Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) tease from the post-credits scene from Black Widow will play into this.

Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) is the final Phase 1 hero to receive a standalone story centered on his character, narrowly falling behind Natasha Romanoff’s Black Widow. Hawkeye will introduce his protégé, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). Producer Trinh Tin has said that the series will be “grounded and funny, packed to the brim with Christmas spirit,” which will set it apart from much of the MCU timeline. The trailer confirmed this as it juxtaposed explosive action scenes with Clint’s traditional dead-pan humor and jaunty Christmas music.

Only one previous entry into the MCU was set at Christmas, and that was Iron Man 3. While the last standalone Tony Stark movie has background trapping of Christmas and a message that arguably parallels aspects of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, it does very little with the setting beyond that. This might be in part because Tony Stark is so alone at this point in his life, and a lot of the traditional scenes expected from a Christmas movie rely on a sense of community that his reunion with Pepper Potts as they watch his suits explode cannot entirely pay off.

The MCU is set to embrace seasonal entries with the planned 2022 The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, but long before that arrives Hawkeye is already poised to become the MCU’s definitive Christmas story. A key part of Clint Barton’s narrative throughout the MCU has been his focus on family and community. The loss of his family to Thanos’ snap destroys such a central element of him that he goes off the rails for a long time, and the close connection between Natasha and the Barton family highlights the importance of found family. The series promises to play up all of these aspects with the trailer suggesting that Kate Bishop will become part of Barton’s found family and that his relationship with his family will play a major part of the series.

The release timeline for Hawkeye fits perfectly for this Christmas story plan as it is set to premiere on November 24 2021 with its final episode airing on December 29. However, it is also a slightly odd direction for Marvel to take at this point. While the MCU has often dealt with political issues, it has traditionally steered clear of religion or associating itself with particular religious festivals. This has presumably been in an effort to appeal to a wider and more global audience. So while Hawkeye will almost certainly make better use of the season than Iron Man 3, it will be interesting to see how some viewers respond.
