Learn What To Do In a Wildfire Emergency With New Dark Horse Comic

Wildfires are unfortunately becoming a fact of life for many people, particularly those living in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, and now Dark Horse Comics has partnered with the Oregon Office of Emergency Management to bring readers Without Warning: Wildfire, a comic detailing what to do in case of a wildfire. It is the third entry in the Without Warning emergency preparedness comics series, after previous entries on earthquakes and tsunamis.

Public service campaigns have utilized comics as a way of spreading awareness since the medium’s beginning and as the world continues to experience natural disasters such as earthquakes and extreme weather brought about by climate change, disaster preparedness comics have gained in popularity. To meet this need, Dark Horse began the Without Warning series, aimed at teaching people how to respond in the event of a disaster. The first two entries were on earthquakes and tsunamis and were tailored to residents of the Pacific Northwest (and later adapted to other regions). Now the third entry concerns a very real concern for not only people in the Pacific Northwest, but the world over: wildfire.

In a press release on Dark Horse’s website, the publisher explained that the comic, and the entire Without Warning series, arose from a need to teach teens and young adults about disaster preparedness. The announcement quoted Kristin Babbs, CEO and President of the Keep Oregon Green Association, who reinforced the need for such publications, citing the effectiveness of the Smokey the Bear campaign in reaching young children, but saying, “it’s been challenging to find engaging and creative resources to talk with teens and young adults about wildfire prevention,” The book’s story, written by Paul Tobin, with art by David Hahn, colors by Tony Avina and letters by Nate Piekos, features two hikers who must flee a fast-moving wildfire. The book will be available for free, in both English and Spanish, on Dark Horse’s website, along with the Oregon Office of Emergency Management’s website.

The Pacific Northwest is filled with lush forests and breathtaking scenery—but it is also highly susceptible to wildfires. As climate change continues to accelerate, the severity of wildfires, not only in the Pacific Northwest but around the world, comics such as Without Warning: Wildfire become even more important.

Teenagers and young adults are inheriting a world where wildfires will be even more prominent, and Without Warning: Wildfires, from Dark Horse Comics, will help them prepare for a worst case scenario.
