HeMan vs SheRa Which Netflix Reboot Is Better

Which animated revival is better – Masters of the Universe: Revelation or She-Ra & the Princesses of Power? There’s always been a cyclical aspect to popular culture, with ideas flourishing in one generation and then returning in the next. In part that’s driven by nostalgia, because every generation of directors and showrunners remembers the things they loved when they were younger, and they can’t resist the opportunity of revisiting their childhood memories.

In a quirk of timing, the last few years have seen two linked franchises return to animated life on Netflix. Noelle Stevenson’s She-Ra & the Princesses of Power was far more than a spinoff series, unapologetically dedicated to reinventing Etheria’s heroes for the twenty-first century; there’s no need for a She-Ra season 6 because the story is now complete. Now, Kevin Smith has taken a different approach with Masters of the Universe: Revelation, creating a revival of He-Man as well. Given the strong connections between these franchises – She-Ra was originally envisioned as Prince Adam’s long-lost sister – it’s fascinating to compare and contrast the two revivals.

Any comparison needs to begin with the recognition that Noelle Stevenson and Kevin Smith took completely different approaches with their respective revivals. Smith is unapologetic about that, insisting Masters of the Universe: Revelation doesn’t reinvent He-Man in the way Stevenson did She-Ra. “To be honest with you, I wouldn’t have taken the job if they were like, ‘You get to reinvent He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,'” he observed in an interview. “I would not be the guy you’d tap to reinvent something. But if you want to keep it going lovingly, true to the franchise and just growing up the characters a little bit so their conversations are a little more adult-oriented? [I’m your guy.]”

This naturally means that, in terms of sheer creativity, Stevenson’s She-Ra & the Princesses of Power is light-years ahead of Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Stevenson and Smith show their love for their respective franchises in different ways, with Stevenson weaving concepts from the original animated series into a new shape, while Smith simply builds on the foundation of what has gone before. Stevenson achieved her goal perfectly, completing her She-Ra story after five seasons, winning a whole new fanbase. At times she had to push for the character arcs she wanted, but she even achieved her goal of putting She-Ra and Catra in a lesbian relationship. Her series can rightly go down as one of the best animated shows on Netflix.

Unfortunately, while Smith aims to continue the original franchise from a more adult perspective, he doesn’t quite pull it off – largely because Masters of the Universe: Revelation feels uncomfortable with its own identity. Speaking to Gizmodo, Smith reflected on how he wanted to turn He-Man into an adult animation by confronting the characters with things they’d never faced before – betrayal, abuse, trauma, and grief. “Then I saw Invincible,” he ruefully admitted, “and I was like, ‘We are not adult animation. We are a kids’ show.'” Masters of the Universe: Revelation’s all-star cast may not save the show from feeling unsteady on its feet and like a children’s series grasping at being adult – thinking a few swear words and a bleak plot will suffice. It doesn’t quite live up to its potential, and while it will appeal to nostalgia, it’s unlikely to draw in new fans.

Netflix is to be commended for its willingness to sign off on these revivals, but the better series is undeniably She-Ra & the Princesses of Power – simply because that show knows what it is trying to do, and achieves it with remarkable ease. In contrast, Masters of the Universe: Revelation has gotten off to an unsteady start, and really needs to figure out what kind of show it is going to be in future.
