Heroes of Color Will Finally Tell THEIR Side of DCs History

A new series coming from DC Black Label, The Other Side of the DC Universe, is set to offer fans a fresh perspective on the comic book universe, exploring major events throughout DC Comics history through the eyes of heroes of color.

The five-issue miniseries will be penned by award-winning screenwriter John Ridley, with an artists team of Giuseppe “Cammo” Camuncoli, Andrea Cucchi, and colorist José Villarrubia. Camuncoli, along with Marco Mastrazzo, and Jamal Campbell will also handle the covers for the series. Ridley won and Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2014 for penning 12 Years a Slave, which also won Best Picture. DC’s announcement of the series promises that even the most ardent fans will have never looked at the comic universe like this.

Foundational moments throughout the comics’ long and storied history will be depicted through a fresh lens as the bimonthly series follows the likes of Black Lightning (Jefferson Pierce), his daughter Thunder (Anissa Pierce), Herald (Mal Duncan), Bumbleebee (Karen Beecher), The Question (Renee Montoya), and Katana (Tatsu Yamashiro). If any of those names ring a bell with casual DC fans, it’s likely because Montoya and Yamashiro played pivotal roles in Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad, respectively, and CW’s Black Lightning TV show is set to return for a fourth season later this year. The series is scheduled to release November 24, both in print and on digital platforms. The series’ announcement from DC promises to present readers with a side of the comic world they’ve never experienced before: “DC fans may think they know the history of the DC Universe, but its true history is far more complex. The Other History of the DC Universe isn’t about saving the world—it’s about having the strength to simply be who you are.”

This will be far from Ridley’s first foray into the comic book medium. His past writing credits for DC include The Authority: Human on the Inside, The Razor’s Edge: Warblade, The American Way; and its followup, The American Way: Those Above and Those Below. Ridley will also be writing a short in the upcoming Batman: Joker War Zone anthology, due out September 29.

The Other History of the DC Universe seems more relevant – even prescient – today than ever, considering the state of social unrest and injustice rampant in many parts of the world, as readers will be able to see how the DC world looks from a perspective that is far too often not explored. In the author’s own words:

“Considering the events of the last few months, I don’t think there has been a more urgent need to see the world through a variety of lenses and perspectives. I am deeply appreciative of DC, Cammo, and Andrea, and to all the artisans who have literally put years of work into these stories. I am so enthusiastic for the opportunity to share this series with both the longtime fans of the DCU and a new generation of readers who I hope will feel invited and encouraged to join in.”

While the books will undoubtedly draw detractors falsely claiming forced diversity in comics, The Other History of the DC Universe promises to be an insightful and, hopefully, enlightening spin on some of the biggest events throughout the books’ history and maybe even change some readers’ perspectives when revisiting their favorite stories from the past. So see the DC world with a new set of eyes beginning November 24.
