Heroes Reborn 10 Other Classic Marvel Crossovers The Comics Should Revisit

Though the current Heroes Reborn comic book event only borrows the name of the original ’90s storyline, it continues a tradition in Marvel Comics from the last few years of giving modern updates to classic crossovers from the past. There are a lot of Marvel crossovers big and small that would be good to revisit for longtime fans and new readers alike.

A new take on classic crossovers also has another benefit as well. With most Marvel Comics characters now back under the roof of Marvel Studios, both the MCU and the comics would benefit from new source material spotlighting some of its biggest heroes and villains, possibly to be the focus of new movies and series in the near future.

10 The Private War Of Doctor Doom

One of the earliest Marvel crossovers was The Private War Of Doctor Doom, which focused on a major plot by one of Marvel’s most heinous villains. In the story, Doctor Doom goes to war with Attuma the War Lord from Atlantis and actually starts an unlikely friendship with Namor, the Prince of Atlantis, in his bid to take over the world.

Given the likelihood both of these characters will feature prominently in the near future of the MCU, this would be a good concept for Marvel to revisit, especially as both are back to their familiar roles in the comics at the moment. The mini-crossover took place between The Avengers #150–156, The Avengers Annual #6 and Super-Villain Team-Up #9

9 Corporation

With the debut of The Power Broker in the MCU, now would be a good time for the comics to revisit an obscure storyline from the late 70s. Corporation was a loose crossover playing out between 1977 and 1979 through various books including Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, and Deadly Hands Of Kung Fu, starring Shang-Chi.

The evil international conglomeration known only as The Corporation tried various schemes to increase their wealth and power, including trying to usurp control of the Machine Man. The original Power Broker, Curtiss Jackson, is one of the leaders of the outfit in the comics.

8 Inferno

Heroes Reborn 10 Other Classic Marvel Crossovers The Comics Should Revisit

Inferno is one of the big early X-Men crossovers from the late 80s. This story saw Madelyne Pryor, the wife of Cyclops, revealed as a clone of Jean Grey. In her despair, she becomes the Goblin Queen and tries to pull the world into a hell dimension. While the circumstances would be difficult to repeat in the present era of the X-Men, Madelyne still exists as a clone thanks to Mr. Sinister.

She’s persona non grata on Krakoa though, a source of frustration for her and her love interest, Alex Summers. A redux of the story could be in the offing as a hell dimension full of demons could be an interesting place for someone to open a Krakoan gate to.

7 The Evolutionary War

The Evolutionary War is a crossover that ran through all of Marvel’s 1988 annuals. The High Evolutionary, a human scientist whose experiments on himself led to his developing heightened intelligence and abilities, seeks to accelerate the evolution of humanity by unleashing a series of deadly attacks.

The High Evolutionary is an interesting figure to revisit in the comics as he currently plays a role in the oft-revised origin of The Scarlet Witch and her brother, Quicksilver. Once the Maximoff twins had been the children of Magneto, but recent retcons changed that. They are currently not mutants, but the result of experiments by The High Evolutionary.

6 Avengers / Defenders War

The Avengers have faced off against the X-Men on a couple of occasions in the comics, but one of their earliest battles against other heroes was against The Defenders. The Avengers/Defenders War played out in 1973, an eight-issue crossover between both the main Avengers and Defenders titles.

The two heroic teams are forced to battle each other for The Evil Eye, but later discover they are both the pawns of two of the most powerful magical entities in the Marvel Universe, Loki and Dormammu.

5 Thanos War

Thanos is famously at the heart of one of the most consequential Marvel events of all time, The Infinity Gauntlet. But long before that, he was part of some big crossovers like The Thanos War. This story, also from 1973, sees Thanos attempt to gain control of the Cosmic Cube and therefore the galaxy.

His cosmic ambition draws in a number of titles, including Iron Man, Captain Marvel (at this time, Mar-Vell, the first and one of the most powerful versions of Captain Marvel), Daredevil, and The Avengers.

4 Blood And Thunder

The upcoming Thor Love And Thunder movie doesn’t seem like it has anything to do with the Blood And Thunder comic book crossover, but the story might be worth a revisit in the comics. This tale from the early ’90s has Thor lose his mind.

He goes on a violent rampage that eventually requires Thanos to help the other Avengers, along with the Silver Surfer, to stop the God Of Thunder. The crossover ran through a number of titles, including the main Thor title, Silver Surfer, and Adam Warlock And The Infinity Watch.

3 Fall Of The Mutants

The X-Men and mutants, in general, seem to be enjoying an idyllic moment on the living island of Krakoa at the moment. Tragedy is never far from the X-Men however and one potential crossover for the current comics to revisit is The Fall Of Mutants. This 1988 storyline ended with the apparent death of the entire X-Men team.

Though the X-Men survived, the ramifications played out for years. This story played out through all of the X-Men titles at the time, and led to the formation of Excalibur, the British-based team made up of X-survivors Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, and Rachel Summers.

2 Phalanx Covenant

One of the many storylines playing out in the Dawn Of X era of current X-Men comics is the far future threat of the Phalanx. The X-Men have actually fought these techno-organic villains before in the mid-’90s crossover The Phalanx Covenant.

The alien race attacks the Earth, leading to a major battle across most of the X-Men titles at the time (it also led to the creation of Generation X). Given the Phalanx’s potential importance to the future of mutants and all of mankind, it could be an interesting concept to revisit.

1 Operation: Galactic Storm

The cosmic aspect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has drawn on some of the comics’ biggest stories. One it hasn’t touched yet but could and would be worth revisiting in the comics is Operation: Galactic Storm.

This 1992 crossover ensnares the Avengers in an intergalactic battle between the Kree and the Shi’Ar, an alien race with deep ties to the X-Men. Major players in the story include The White Vision, Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel, and one of the greatest collective Avengers rosters of all time.
