When Disney+ initially launched, the big selling points were the massive back catalog of favorites from the past and the premiere of The Mandalorian. One of the other new series to fly somewhat under the radar was High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. On paper, the title was a bit too much of a mouthful for some.

However, those who checked out the show loved it. Following teens who put on a musical based on the High School Musical films at the actual school from the movies, it featured great songs, fun performances, and delightful characters. Those characters are played by some impressive young talents that fans should get to know more about.

10 Theater Backgrounds

While it’s obvious that the show is centered around putting on a theater play, the actors playing these characters are in a similar boat. A vast majority of the cast members actually have pretty significant backgrounds in theaters themselves.

Olivia Rodrigo (Nini) started on the stage in elementary school, Joshua Bassett (Ricky) appeared in an adaptation of Calvin Berger, and Larry Saperstein (Big Red) has done Miracle on 34th Street, Fiddler on the Roof, and Cats, among other plays. That’s just the tip of the iceberg too, proving this cast was perfectly selected.

9 Mark St. Cyr’s First Performance

Throughout the first season, a lot of what the main characters were doing was stymied by the acts of East High’s STEM teacher, Mr. Benjamin Mazzara. He believed that the focus on these plays was unimportant compared to his work. Mazzara is played by Mark St. Cyr.

As someone who doesn’t like the stage, he’s one of the few characters who doesn’t sing in season one. However, St. Cyr is pretty good at it. In fact, he got to perform on the show’s Holiday Special. He sang “What Are You Doing For New Year’s Eve” alongside castmate Kate Reinders and she revealed that it was his first-ever on-screen performance.

Speaking of Kate Reinders, she has some seriously impressive credentials on stage. In fact, they’re more impressive than the ones her character Miss Jenn touts to her students. Reinders isn’t just a stage veteran but she’s nabbed some truly iconic roles.

For example, in Into The Woods, she has played Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood across the country. Reinders was also Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked, which earned her a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination. She even showed up as the character on a special episode of Jeopardy!

7 Matt Cornett Is Team Ricky

In terms of the characters involved, this one certainly comes as a surprise. From the first episode, E.J. Caswell (Matt Cornett) is the rival of Ricky Bowen, with both guys vying for the affections of Nini Salazar-Roberts. However, the actor feels differently.

During the D23 Expo before the show officially premiered, many of the cast members were interviewed. While there, Cornett explained that he was “Team Ricky,” meaning he’s rooting for his on-screen rival to get the girl over him. The rest of the cast was split on who they like Nini with more.

6 Audition Songs

For a series where so much singing is required, it makes sense that the actors would have to perform when they auditioned. For example, Olivia Rodrigo sang “Price Tag” by Jessie J. To score his role as Bowen, Joshua Bassett actually belted out “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars to help secure his spot on the show.

Adding to it all, Bassett and Rodrigo actually performed together during the audition. Their chemistry was said to be almost instant, with Rodrigo picking up the harmony beside him in about a minute and they were great together. The rest is history.

5 The Leads Wrote A Song Together

If you need any further proof that Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett are perfect together, then just see where their chemistry took them. Along with their great work on-screen together, they also got to collaborate on something behind-the-scenes for the series.

Barrett and Rodrigo co-wrote the fantastic “Just for a Moment” song. It became one of the most memorable tracks from the show. There is also “All I Want,” which Rodrigo wrote by herself and actually became her first real hit song.

4 Dara Reneé Wasn’t Supposed To Be A Main Cast Member

When auditioning for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Dara Reneé ran into a bit of trouble. The talented lady tried out for the roles of Gina and Ashlyn but they went to other actors. However, those behind the show seemed to like her enough to have her audition for Kourtney.

She didn’t even have a script to read since the character was meant for only a single episode. She did so well that they called her back for the part and expanded it to a series regular role. Kourtney went on to become a fan favorite and Reneé even created one of the show’s best arrangements.

3 Sofia Wylie Performed With Justin Bieber

One of the best characters on the show was Gina Porter, played by Sofia Wylie. She begins the series as an antagonist but as things progress, the audience learns more about her and comes to appreciate her. Wylie is different from her co-stars in that her background isn’t in theater.

It’s actually in dance. Though most fans know her from Andi Mack, she appeared beforehand on So You Think You Can Dance and America’s Got Talent as a dancer. Most impressively, Wylie actually was handpicked to perform on stage during Justin Bieber’s “Purpose Tour” back in 2017.

2 Yes, This Is The Same Olivia Rodrigo With A No. 1 Song

At the beginning of 2021, a major song took the world by storm. Helped out by her popularity on TikTok, Olivia Rodrigo released “Driver’s License” and it was instantly all over the place. In fact, the song actually reached number one in multiple countries.

A lot of the fans who fell in love with the heartbreaking song aren’t fully aware of who Rodrigo is away from it. Some didn’t even know she was the star of a Disney+ series. However, it is indeed the same talented teenager who joined an exclusive club with a No. 1 hit single.

1 Joshua Bassett Has History With A High Schol Musical

In what has to be one of the more ironic and strange coincidences in television history, Joshua Bassett actually can trace his career back to High School Musical. It started back when he was only eight-years-old as he landed a community theater role in a production of High School Musical.

That was over a decade ago and he only played J.V. Jock No. 2. Despite it only being a small part, Bassett was hooked and went on to appear in over 30 stage productions. The fact that he is now in a show based on the films seems very fitting.
