Hillary Clinton shared Chrissy Teigen’s post about her stillborn son Jack, and the emotional essay is part of a very public grieving process that the supermodel (and her husband John Legend from The Voice) have shared with fans.

Teigen lost her baby on September 30, after spending multiple days in a Los Angeles hospital. Even with the stress and heartbreak of tests and tragic news, Teigen requested that her mother and husband document the experience with photographs. The images would help Chrissy to remember her baby son and move through the stages of grief. She shared the pictures with followers. The decision to post the photos was a controversial one. Some critics found the pictures exploitative and dragged Teigen and Legend for capitalizing on their own misfortune. Teigen, still recovering at home, penned an honest and unflinching essay about the stillbirth and the effect it’s had on her family, as well as the backlash she received for being so honest.

Much of Teigen’s fanbase rushed to her defense, praising the piece and applauding Chrissy Teigen for her continued frankness about women’s issues. However, there was one supporter she never imagined she’d have: Hillary Clinton. The former Secretary of State tweeted a shoutout to Teigen on Twitter. Clinton wrote: “Thank you, @chrissyteigen, for your bravery and grace in starting a hard conversation to help other families heal alongside yours.” Teigen was clearly moved by the show of support. She responded: “I’m so honored @hillaryclinton. You have dedicated your life to fighting for women’s and children’s health, so to have you share my piece about my experience means the absolute world to me. Wow. Wow.” See Chrissy’s tweet below:

Teigen’s pregnancy was in jeopardy prior to receiving a partial placenta abruption diagnosis. As she wrote in her piece, her physicians placed her on bed rest in an attempt to get the fetus to 28 weeks. However, at 20 weeks, Teigen experienced profuse bleeding and discomfort. She graphically detailed every aspect of her condition. What really stood out about the essay was the very stern words she wrote about her detractors. She noted that she doesn’t care who doesn’t like her pictures and explained in her signature way that her documentation of the ordeal was for her, or for anyone else who shared her experience (or was curious about it). The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Fans flocked, posting messages of support on Teigen’s social media pages. They also left words of encouragement for John Legend.

It takes courage to go through something so harrowing and then share the ordeal with strangers. For families who have lost children to miscarriages and stillbirths, her honesty is a gift that raises awareness about the process and the emotions behind it. Teigen and John Legend from The Voice aren’t the only Hollywood celebrities to lose children via miscarriage or stillbirth. Stars like Keanu Reeves and his late girlfriend Jennifer Syme, James Van Der Beek and his wife Kimberly, and Gabrielle Union and her husband Dwyane Wade, have all been through similar turmoil. Although such tragedies are typically extremely private times in peoples’ lives, Teigen’s admission may encourage others to reach out for support. This should be celebrated, rather than subjected to judgment and ridicule.
