A breakout hit in Winter 2021’s lineup of seasonal anime, Horimiya introduced the loving couple Kyouko Hori and Izumi Miyamura and the heartwarming supporting cast of their friends and family. The anime centered on Hori and Miyamura formally meeting and, despite their outward appearances, learning about one another on a deeper level.

Fans of the series watched as Miyamura, a victim of bullying throughout middle school and an outcast in high school, blossomed as a result of his affectionate relationship with Hori, ultimately finding more self-confidence and making numerous friends. Although the show has ended after adapting the final scenes from the manga, those who appreciated Miyamura’s voice actor Kouki Uchiyama may be interested in watching the dynamic roles he portrays in other anime.

10 My Hero Academia: Tomura Shigaraki

Perhaps coming as a shock to fans who appreciated the good-natured Miyamura, Uchiyama’s role in the wildly popular My Hero Academia sees him starring as the anime’s primary antagonist. In a world where a large portion of the population has developed “quirks,” a euphemism for superpowers, trained and licensed heroes protect society from villains and disasters of all kinds.

The show follows Izuku “Deku” Midoriya, a boy born without a quirk, and his struggles to control the incredible power he inherits from the legendary hero All Might. Shigaraki’s arc runs parallel to Midoriya’s in many ways, especially in the case of him being the protégé of one of the world’s greatest crime lords, All For One. With a burning resentment for hero culture, Shigaraki assembles like-minded villains and sets out to destroy society in its current iteration.

9 Devilman Crybaby: Akira Fudo

In Netflix’s visually stunning—though polarizing—adaptation of Devilman Crybaby, Uchiyama voices Akira Fudo, initially a shy and reserved high school student who becomes the eponymous Devilman when he combines with the powerful demon Amon. This event, as are many others, is orchestrated by Fudo’s childhood friend Ryo Asuka.

Upon merging with Amon, Fudo’s physical appearance and temperament as a human is altered, too; he becomes more athletic, sexual, and aggressive, though he retains his protective and good-natured heart. While there are heart-warming moments and emotionally powerful scenes, the anime primarily explores a world slipping into demonic entropy by showcasing humanity’s greedy and destructive nature.

8 Fate/Apocrypha: Amakusa Shirou “Kotomine” Tokisada

As the Nasuverse possesses many diverging paths and alternate timelines, the events that take place and even the names of characters can be confusing. Fate/Apocrypha is no exception; As the name implies, Apocrypha takes place in an alternate chronology that features a Great Holy Grail War, which is essentially a 7-on-7 battle between two teams of masters and their legendary servants rather than the traditional battle royale between individuals.

Amakusa Shirou, voiced by Uchiyama, is a Ruler-class servant meant to oversee Grail Wars with impartiality; however, he was summoned through nefarious means as a combatant, survived the war, and took on a physical form. In doing so, he was able to join the Church—often arbitrators in the Grail Wars—and abuse his position to manipulate the events of Apocrypha as its primary antagonist.

7 Haikyuu!!: Kei Tsukishima

While Haikyuu!! is a sports anime that focuses on the Karasuno High men’s volleyball team, its driving force is undoubtedly the incredible growth and development its characters undergo which is then reflected on the court. Kei Tsukishima, Karasuno’s tallest and arguably most apathetic character, hides his passion for volleyball behind dry and biting sarcasm that is excellently delivered by Uchiyama’s voice acting.

Snide and antagonistic, Tsukishima is quick to tease his teammates or downplay his mistakes with self-deprecating comments. Beneath his humor and affected temperament, however, lies a desire to play volleyball at a high level and, as the series progresses, Tsukishima exerts himself for his team by making incredible blocks and applying his clever intellect to develop winning strategies.

6 Hunter x Hunter: Meruem, King Of The Chimera Ants

As an anime full of incredible powers, duplicitous strategies, and breath-taking battles, Hunter x Hunter’s Chimera Ant arc stands out as a fan favorite. Born from the Chimera Ant Queen, Meruem is intended to be a perfect being capable of unparalleled violence and capable of dominating the world for his colony. Due to his status as king and the pampered treatment he receives, Meruem is callous and harbors feelings of superiority and entitlement towards all other beings.

It quickly becomes apparent that his abilities are on par with his own haughty view of himself, as his fighting prowess is unmatched. However, while learning strategy from playing board games, the king meets his match in a blind girl named Komugi, who shows him the flaws in his world view by continuously defeating him at the fictional game Gungi.

5 Jujutsu Kaisen: Toge Inumaki

The world of Jujutsu Kaisen is engaged in a clandestine war against spirits that attack and harass the living. Jujutsu Sorcerers, those trained to combat otherworldly evil, utilize Cursed Energy to enhance their physical abilities and to utilize supernatural abilities known as Cursed Techniques. Toge Inumaki, a second-year student at Jujutsu High in Tokyo, is part of the anime’s supporting cast and boasts both a quirky means for communication and unleashing powerful attacks: his voice and language.

All of the words Inumaki speaks are infused with Cursed Energy—a technique known as Cursed Speech—therefore he is forced to speak only the names of food when not in battle in an effort to avoid accidental harm. When in battle, Inumaki can command less powerful spirits to “explode”; stronger Cursed Spirits will not easily succumb to his powers, but he can still harm or hinder his enemies.

4 Astra Lost In Space: Ulgar Zweig

Taking place in the near future of 2063, Astra Lost in Space follows a group of nine students who are displaced by thousands of lightyears by a mysterious orb of light. As they were wearing spacesuits at the time of their transportation, the party is able to temporarily survive within the vacuum of space; the group spots an abandoned spaceship and manages to board it, dubbing it the Astra.

As with many of the characters voiced by Uchiyama, Ulgar Zweig is initially opposed to acts of compassion and or generosity, believing the members of his impromptu team should all perform tasks on an individual level rather than assist one another. These feelings stem from a childhood steeped in tragedy and mistreatment, but through his time spent being co-dependent on the other stranded students, Zweig begins to overcome his issues and solitary inclinations.

3 You And Me: Yuta Asaba

As the anime’s main characters are five high school boys, You and Me is a slice of life that focuses on the ever-evolving nature of friendship. Described by fans as an ode to “bromance,” the narrative follows a circle of friends as they adapt to new acquaintances and the realization that their youthful, carefree days are drawing to a close.

Yuta Asaba and his twin brother Yuki provide an element of familial brotherhood to the group that serves as an interesting canvas for exploring themes of identity. Although stoic, Yuta’s personality is mature, as he looks after his friends with the attitude of big brother—an outlook that is informed by his position as the elder twin.

2 Yuri!!! On Ice: Yuri “Yurio” Plisetsky

In contrast to Yuri!!! on Ice’s Japanese protagonist Yuri Katsuki’s mild and self-conscious nature, the Russian Yuri “Yurio” Plisetsky is his aggressive and precocious foil; foul-mouthed and ill-tempered, Yurio’s indomitable and tempestuous personality is represented on the ice by his passionate, incredibly mechanically talented skating.

While Yuri’s narrative sees him coached by his idol, Victor Nikiforov, as he strives to find confidence in his own abilities, Yurio works towards refinement and expressing his emotional truth through a mode of skating that incorporates ballet. Although he isn’t directly mentored by Victor, the choreography he is given both allows him to grow into his own skater and to develop into a multifaceted character that can understand and express unconditional love.

Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn heavily focuses on the universe’s political landscape, as the eponymous Unicorn Gundam serves as a key to releasing classified information that would threaten the Federation’s dominance. Banagher Links, initially a student, becomes the Unicorn Gundam pilot and ultimately plays an integral role in history.
