11 Daemon Will Be Played By Matt Smith Of Doctor Who

While Matt Smith was praised for his performance in the long-running British show, the choice to cast him as a key player in the Targaryen Civil War has been seen as divisive.

Many people don’t see Daemon, an arrogant and cocky warrior, being able to be fully portrayed by Smith. While Smith’s previous roles may not seem suitable for the Rogue Prince, he is an Emmy nominated actor.

10 Daemon Wields A Valyrian Steel Sword Referred to As Dark Sister

Anyone who is a die-hard fan of GoT knows how special Valyrian steel is. Daemon was known to wield a Valyrian steel sword referred to as Dark Sister, one of two ancestral Targaryen swords.

King Jaehaerys I gave Daemon the Dark Sister sword due to his remarkable fighting abilities, though he lost a tournament wielding Dark Sister against Ser Criston Cole. Daemon had used Dark Sister in several fights such as in the War of the Stepstones and ultimately plunged it through the eye of Aemond Targaryen during The Dance of Dragons

9 Daemon Married Into House Royce & Had Two Wives Before Rhaenyra

Before Daemon’s infamous marriage to his niece, he had two other marriages that didn’t end so well. The first was to Lady Rhea Royce, the heir of the Runestone in the Vale of Arryn.

After her death and having been exiled by his brother, Daemon married Laena Velaryon after winning her love in a duel. She was from the Dragonstone Island called Driftmark. Laena died giving birth to Daemon’s son, leading to the events that would see him marrying Rhaenyra

8 Daemon Was Once The Master Of Coin

Daemon held many positions, one of which was the Master Of Coin office. Daemon craved power but the accounting area of Kings Landing did not satisfy someone who was a true warrior.

Daemon wanted to become something other than the Master Of Coin which led to the bitter rivalry between him and the King’s Hand Otto Hightower. This may arguably be the most surprising part of Daemon’s past.

7 Daemon is Known As Lord Of Flea Bottom

Besides his three wives, Daemon was known to be a womanizing philander. Daemon loved to frequent brothels almost as much as Tyrion Lannister. He was known to frequent Flea Bottom, the poorest slum in King’s Landing.

While he called himself the Prince of the City, citizens of King’s Landing jokingly referred to him as Lord of Fleabottom. Daemon befriended a prostitute named Mysaria, who would become an ally and a lover through his time in the Seven Kingdoms.

6 Daemon Had Many Detractors (Including His Brother Viserys I)

Cersei may not be the most hated character in the history of the Seven Kingdoms after all (well she probably still is). Daemon Targaryen may be the biggest villain in the history of the Targaryen house as he is constantly making enemies.

Daemon’s spat with Hand of the King Otto Hightower, the Kingsguard Cristian Cole, and the King’s second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower, was the catalyst of The Dance of Dragons. But it’s probably his falling out with his brother, King Viserys I, that was the most ruthless. From mocking Viserys’ stillborn to rumors of seducing his niece, Daemon is one of the vilest characters in Westeros (and that’s saying something).

5 Daemon’s Look Will Resemble That Of Viserys’ & Rhaegar’s From GoT

The photo of Matt Smith as Daemon led fans to draw parallels to Viserys (not Viserys I) and Rhaegar Targarygens, both of who were in Game Of Thrones. Many noted the character of Daemon could be a cross between the two.

Daemon may have Rhaegar’s good looks and incredible swordsmanship as a warrior while unfortunately possessing elements of Viserys’ appalling lack of character. The best hope for Rhaenyra is that Daemon doesn’t treat her like Viserys treated Daenerys.

4 Daemon is Known As The Rogue Prince

The falling out with King Viserys I for mocking his nephews’ stillbirth and his trysts with Rhaenyra made Daemon an unconventional member of the Targaryen household.

The title of The Rogue Prince was bestowed on him for continually breaking away from the Targaryen household. While it may be more prestigious than “The Lord Of Flea Bottom,” Daemon’s title as The Rogue Prince may be just as derogatory as the term Kingslayer, given his betrayals and his role in the Targaryen Civil War.

3 Daemon is An Extremely Skilled Warrior

Despite losing a tournament to celebrate his brother’s accession to king, Daemon is an extremely skilled warrior. After leaving King’s Landing, he conquered the Stepstones islands due to a desire to inherit his own Kingdom.

Daemon uses his sword, Dark Sister, to bear swift violence on any adversary who crosses him. Daemon’s also a cunning killer as well, murdering both his brother-in-law, Laenor, and Aegon II’s son.

2 His Last Marriage Was To His Niece Rhaenyra

This is arguably the most scandalous affair in the history of the Seven Kingdoms as it was the catalyst to the Targaryen Civil War. In a brazen power grab, Daemon married his niece Rhaenyra without an official blessing. Daemon’s desire for marriage was due to Rhaenyra being heir to the throne.

This caused a split with Queen Alicent Hightower who made Aegon II the king after Viserys I’s death. Daemon fighting for Rhaenyra’s right for the throne seems like the one strain of just principle in his life, until fans realize that Daemon is cheating on her with a mistress and a dragonseed.

1 Daemon Targaryen’s Body Was Never Found

The Dance of Dragons was a bloody Civil War that ended up killing most of the Targaryen dragons to the point they were nearly extinct. While Daemon fought valiantly, thrusting a sword through Aemond Targaryen’s eye, his body disappeared after his dragon crashed during the Battle of Above God’s Eye.

Historians of the Targaryen house believe he died, but there are also rumors that Daemon survived and ran away with his mistress Nettles, a dragonseed he had courted. Whichever the case, Daemon never achieved his one dream of sitting on the throne.
