How American Horror Story Could Bring Back Coven’s Witches

Ryan Murphy’s long-running horror anthology series, American Horror Story, has been recently renewed through a thirteenth season; the show runner has talked at-length about his ideas for the future, and one of those involves bringing back the witches from season three, Coven. Murphy has already done this once before, in season eight, Apocalypse, which served as a crossover season between Murder House (season 1) and Coven.

American Horror Story debuted on FX in 2011, and immediately made waves. The edgy series covered numerous dark topics, had a talented ensemble cast, and touched on twisted, disturbing content that satisfied horror fans in a way that typically can only be found in movies. In a way, American Horror Story’s success paved the way for many other horror television series to gain their footing on network television, as the other horror and horror-adjacent series at the time (and before), such as True Blood and Dexter, were typically on premium channels like HBO and Showtime.

With the series’ landmark tenth season to debut likely sometime in fall 2020, Murphy has suggested several ideas about the show’s future; he’s been reaching out to veteran cast members from the show’s previous season to return, but has also expressed interest in having the witches from the show’s third season, Coven, make another appearance. Here’s some of the ways this could be possible.

American Horror Story Could Do Another Crossover Season

How American Horror Story Could Bring Back Coven’s Witches

American Horror Story has already done a crossover season, but there’s no reason they couldn’t explore the same connection – or a different one – again. As Murphy has confirmed that every season of his series is connected in some way, the witches in Coven could easily appear in another season’s timeline. Apocalypse was set primarily in a post-apocalyptic, future timeline, but since their powers would allow time travel, as that’s part of how they defeated Michael Langdon in Apocalypse, they could appear anywhere. Since the events of Apocalypse could have changed other seasons’ timelines – though this hasn’t been confirmed – it’d be possible to involve the Coven in a way that sees major characters return to tie up loose ends. As seen in films like The Butterfly Effect, time travel can have serious complications and consequences.

American Horror Story Could Do A Coven Prequel

In Roanoke, the series’ fifth season, the character of Scathach (Lady Gaga) was revealed to be the first ever Supreme, a title that would later become the primary impetus for conflict in Coven. Taking the route of a prequel could be interesting as none of the actresses from Coven played Scathach, so there wouldn’t need to be crossover in that regard if Gaga wanted to reprise her role for a short story arc. As the actors involved with American Horror Story are all used to playing multiple roles, sometimes even in the same season. So it wouldn’t be a stretch to see them playing witches from that era, and then flash forward to modern day. This is an interesting concept as well because it creates an avenue to explore the heritage of magic being passed down, which was touched on in Coven. Motherhood – and legacies – was a primary focus of not only Coven, but speaks to the familial tethers that permeate American Horror Story from season to season in different ways.
