How Bucky Has Betrayed Wakanda & His White Wolf Future

In Marvel’s Falcon & The Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes has betrayed Wakanda and the name they gave him as their White Wolf. Bucky has broken Baron Zemo out of prison as he needed his help, and this has angered Wakanda greatly, sending the Dora Milaje to recapture Zemo once more. This includes the Dora’s second in command Ayo, revealed to have been instrumental in helping Bucky free his mind from HYDRA’s control. After everything Wakanda did for Bucky, it’s logical that they would feel betrayed after he freed a criminal who caused their nation so much pain. Not only that, but Bucky himself is risking a reversion back into the Winter Soldier, seemingly betraying his future as the White Wolf as well.

Falcon & The Winter Soldier episode 4, “The Whole World is Watching”, begins with a flashback, seeing Ayo helping Bucky in Wakanda break the trigger words that forced him to comply as HYDRA’s dark assassin for decades. The moment where he finally becomes free from those words was a huge moment for Bucky, and it was all thanks to the efforts of Ayo and Princess Shuri. Not only that, but prior films in the MCU revealed that Wakanda granted Bucky asylum and sanctuary, giving him time to recover and find peace, while also giving him a new vibranium arm when the inevitable fight came in Avengers: Infinity War, declaring him to be their new White Wolf.

However, Ayo has tracked Bucky down in the present series along with Zemo and Sam Wilson’s Falcon, and she’s prepared to take Zemo, angered that Bucky was the one who freed him. After all, Zemo was responsible for the death of King T’Chaka in Captain America: Civil War, and that’s not something the Dora Milaje would ever forget. Ayo reminds him that they were the ones who removed his dark programming that was “like a rotting fur,” which paved the way for him to become the White Wolf. Despite giving Bucky eight hours with Zemo, the Dora Milaje eventually came for him, which led to Bucky fighting those who aided and supported him so much. This naturally resulted in the Wakandans seeing Bucky as a traitor, specifically Ayo herself.

Wakanda is not wrong to be angered by Bucky’s actions. By freeing Zemo, he ignored the loss and shame felt by the Dora Milaje, who were unable to fulfill their duty to protect their king from the baron’s actions. Furthermore, Bucky working with Zemo is another slap in the face to Wakanda, as the baron took great advantage of Bucky and his Winter Soldier programming as well, which Wakanda worked hard to remove. They likewise gave Bucky a new identity as the White Wolf with a new arm, signifying that they saw Bucky as one of them. However, it appears as though he’s risking all of that with his latest gamble to use Zemo as a means to an end. While there might not have been another way for Bucky and Sam to get to the bottom of this new Super Soldier crisis, it’s still a betrayal of Wakanda on Bucky’s part nonetheless.

Because Zemo managed to slip away in the resulting conflict with the Dora Milaje, Ayo and her warriors left Bucky and Sam… for now. Hopefully, Bucky will be able to do right by Wakanda and make amends once Falcon & The Winter Soldier reaches its conclusion, as well as to fully embrace the new role and identity they gave him as the White Wolf, which is important. It’s a name that isn’t burdened by the past, allowing him to look forward to the future in the MCU as a hero.
