How Godzilla vs Kong Can Make Mechagodzilla A Real Titan

Ghidorah’s head provides a way for Mechagodzilla to become a real Titan in Godzilla vs. Kong. Though Godzilla’s robotic counterpart from Toho’s movies hasn’t been officially confirmed for the MonsterVerse, he has been hinted at in the marketing and spoiled by leaks. In 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, he was created as a mechanized kaiju by a race of evil, ape-like aliens plotting to take over the world and Godzilla was forced to defeat the robot twice.

Later, he was reimagined as a force for good and humanity built him as a weapon against Godzilla. As for the MonsterVerse’s take on the classic villain, his origins aren’t altogether clear, but it looks like he may be a creation of Godzilla vs. Kong’s villains, APEX. That would make a lot of sense, considering they’re a company that specializes in cybernetic technology. APEX could construct Mechagodzilla and deploy him against the two titular Titans.

What separates Mechagodzilla from monsters like Godzilla and Kong is that he’s just a tool to be used by others. Since he isn’t a living being per say, he’s typically more of a weapon than he is his own character. Toho changed its Mechagodzilla formula in the 2000s with Kiryu, the third incarnation of the robot. Since he was made from the skeleton of the 1954 Godzilla, the monster’s DNA infused Kiryu with some of his memories, thus giving him some semblance of an identity. Legendary could take some inspiration from this by using an existing monster to make Mechagodzilla more than just a lifeless robot and into a real Titan.

Ghidorah’s last surviving head could be the key to making that happen, with reports of it appearing in the movie and being hooked up with wires to create a “mechanized creature” have heightened speculation about Mecha-King Ghidorah joining the MonsterVerse in Godzilla vs. Kong. However, it’s possible the head isn’t actually a sign of Ghidorah being rebuilt as a cyborg. Instead, it could be used to bring Mechagodzilla to life. Its DNA and brain could make Mechagodzilla into a sentient being and thus, an actual Titan. In a sense, Ghidorah would live again via Mechagodzilla, who would serve as a merging of Godzilla’s two biggest rivals from Toho’s library. The MonsterVerse going in this direction would be a good move, as it would certainly make Mechagodzilla into a menacing foe. That feels necessary, given that Godzilla and Kong may have to team up against him at the end of the movie.

Not only would this origin give Mechagodzilla the ability to function as an independent entity, but it could also explain why Godzilla seems to be going berserk in the MonsterVerse. If Godzilla somehow senses humans are trying to revive his greatest enemy, that could be the real reason why APEX sites are being mysteriously destroyed and why Godzilla is acting so hostile to humanity. His mission may be to stop Ghidorah from being reborn in Mechagodzilla, and Kong could unknowingly serve as an obstacle to that goal in Godzilla vs. Kong.
