How I Met Your Mother 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

How I Met Your Mother had its final season in 2014, capping off the series with 9 full seasons of this group of friends in New York City. While each character definitely has its quirks, the friendships between these main five (and supporting characters) will either make your heart melt… or make you cringe in disgust.

There’s a lot of dispute over the best and worst relationships on this popular sitcom, and this list is going to settle it once and for all. Who make up the five best friendships that we all aspire to have? But more importantly, who are the five worst?

10 WORST: Ted & Punchy

How I Met Your Mother 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

We’ll start off with an easy and relatively inarguable one. We’re introduced to Punchy (Chris Romano) in season three, and he appears in a total of four episodes. He starts off by punching Ted at every possible chance (clever nickname), but we also see Ted revert to his immature high school self.

If this isn’t enough to make you cringe at their friendship, we also see a horribly embarrassing Best Man speech by Ted at Punchy’s wedding, and this assures us that these two are absolutely terrible friends to one another, and should probably keep their distance.

9 BEST: Robin & Lily

How I Met Your Mother 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

While the internet kind of drags Lily through the mud, we’ll support the fact that she and Robin are actually incredible supporters of one another. Lily helps Robin connect with females, and honestly, Lily is pretty much the only one that Robin is able to succeed with.

These two strong women support one another, and they know each other’s deepest secrets and insecurities. Women supporting women is something that more TV shows should focus on, and these two fit the bill.

8 WORST: Robin & Patrice

How I Met Your Mother 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

This one is also pretty obvious to anyone that’s ever seen an episode with Patrice in it. We get that Robin doesn’t like Patrice (Ellen D. Williams) because you don’t have to love everybody, but why exactly doesn’t she like Patrice? More importantly, why does she hang out with Patrice only to yell at her?

What’s even worse is Patrice’s total infatuation with Robin, and the lengths she goes to in order to make her happy (see Barney’s wedding proposal here). This relationship is unhealthy on both sides, and while it’s comical, yikes. If you’re interested, we can confirm that there are definitely “nobody asked you, Patrice!” t-shirts out there for sale.

7 BEST: Marshall & Robin

How I Met Your Mother 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

Robin is going to show up a couple more times on this list (in both categories), as is Marshall. While the friendship between these two isn’t exactly a super close bond, somehow these two always end up there for each other when it really counts. Isn’t that the kind of best friend that we all need?

These two never undermine each other during the series, and in fact, we see the best acts of friendships between these two. We dare you not to catch all of the feels when Marshall takes Robin to the Hoser Hut to help ease her homesickness. We’re melting.

6 WORST: Marshall & Brad

How I Met Your Mother 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

This is another secondary character that really just comes in to demonstrate a toxic friendship. While it’s kind of cute that Marshall and Brad (Joe Manganiello) try to demonstrate their confidence in their masculinity by brunching together, their friendship is still kind of uncomfortable.

It’s safe to say that Brad isn’t exactly the best of people, and we can’t help but hate him after he woos the jury in the courtroom against Marshall. They’re definitely ex-best friends now.

5 BEST: Barney & Marshall

How I Met Your Mother 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

Barney is definitely a controversial character and one that is pretty selfish. However, we argue that Marshall and Barney bring out the craziness in one another, but they also bring out the best in each other. Barney respects Marshall for who he is, and Marshall also respects Barney for who he is.

These two have the most fun together, and never fight or so much as cross each other. These two are buddy goals, and we all need a friend to do spontaneous stuff with.

4 WORST: Ted & Lily

How I Met Your Mother 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

Moving on to the more controversial items on this list, we strongly believe that Ted and Lily definitely deserve a spot on the “worst friendship” part of this list. Lily and Ted have been friends since college, and yes, they have a bond that none of the other characters seem to achieve, yet somehow this friendship still manages to be toxic as hell. They constantly undermine each other, and everything about their friendship is selfish.

Do we have to remind you that Lily confessed to sabotaging Ted’s relationships because she didn’t like them? Or when Ted calls her a big fat grinch? Or when Lily steals his boss’s prized baseball just to teach Ted a lesson? Yikes.

3 BEST: Marshall & Ted

How I Met Your Mother 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

Alright, so this one is pretty undeniable. Ted and Marshall have an absolutely pure male bond that is actually pretty rare. They rarely insult or cross one another, and honestly, they even have deep talks and support each other regardless of what they choose. Also, they give each other tough love.

There really is little to complain about in this friendship, and for once this show actually provides a positive bond and a perfect example of friendship.

2 WORST: Barney & Ted

How I Met Your Mother 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

While these two are tentatively the “best friends” of this series, we’re not loving it. Barney is constantly trying to change who Ted is as a person and insulting him whenever he doesn’t participate in his womanizing or spontaneous activities.

On the other hand, Ted barely even tries to be friends with Barney in the first place. He’s constantly acting uninterested and views Barney as immature and insensitive, of course, until it suits him to participate. We’re not even going to open the bag of worms that is Robin. Extra yikes.

1 BEST: Robin & Ted

How I Met Your Mother 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

This friendship might get a lot of shade, but we’re simply arguing that these two are the best at being exactly that: friends. Let’s ignore the finale (where all of our hearts were shattered into a million pieces) for a minute.

Robin and Ted get each other to such an extent that it actually annoys everyone else when they get going with their mimics and inside jokes. These two support each other night and day, and despite their tricky romantic situation, Ted still does everything he can for Robin, and Robin appreciates and helps out Ted all the same. These two are actually friendship goals, and we won’t hear another word about it.
