For nine years, How I Met Your Mother was one of the most popular sitcoms on television. And despite ending in 2014, fans are still rewatching and talking about the series. One topic of discussion that often gets brought up is what are the best seasons of the show.
Many fans agree that the last few don’t stack up, yet the exact ranking of all of them differs based on the individual. However, to get more of a consensus on which seasons are the most and least popular, this list uses the scores for each episode on IMDb (as voted on by thousands of people) and worked out the average per season.
9 Season 9 – 7.6
How I Met Your Mother fans won’t be surprised to see the show’s final season as the lowest rated. Excluding flash-forwards and flashbacks, it all takes place over Robin and Barney’s wedding weekend, so it includes an abundance of mediocre (at best) filler. Plus, Season 9 has a few of the most hated HIMYM episodes ever, from the racially insensitive final slap episode to its divisive finale.
One of the bright sparks of the season is the inclusion of the Mother as a major character. Her individual meetings with the different members of the gang are great, and her “How Your Mother Met Me” episode is one of the sitcom’s best.
8 Season 8 – 8.0
Barney and Robin’s engagement and the reveal of the Mother are the biggest moments of Season 8. However, beyond them, the season is largely forgettable.
There are some solid episodes, such as when Ted is visited by his “future self” in “The Time Travelers,” and “P.S. I Love You,” where the gang watches the final Robin Sparkles video. But most of the other ones fail to live up to How I Met Your Mother’s usual high standard, making for an average season overall. At least it doesn’t include any truly bad episodes like the final season.
7 Season 7 – 8.2
The seventh season puts a lot of focus on Robin’s relationships with Barney and Ted. In the first half, her feelings for Barney start to resurface, and the pair come close to becoming an item again. And later in the season, Ted tells her he loves her. Both arcs lead to some well-written dramatic episodes.
It’s during the big emotional moments where Season 7 excels, but it still provides some laughs, involving ducky ties, Beercules, and antics involving Barney’s new girlfriend, Quinn.
6 Season 6 – 8.2
Season 6 has an excellent mix of comedy and drama. The “Last Words” episode is perhaps the saddest in How I Met Your Mother history as it deals with the aftermath of Marshall’s father’s death. Whereas, “Blitzgiving” is among the funniest episodes of the show, and involves the gang being visited by their unlucky friend, The Blitz.
It’s also a big season for Barney as he meets Nora, the first girl he truly falls for in the show who isn’t Robin, and he also finally connects with his biological father. His interactions with both of them make Barney question his own lifestyle in one of his best-ever arcs.
5 Season 5 – 8.2
The first seven episodes of the fifth season are divisive among How I Met Your Mother fans. This is because Barney and Robin become a couple, and not everyone likes them together. However, Season 5 has a lot to appreciate, even for people who are against the Barney-Robin relationship.
For example, both the Playbook and the Doppelgangers get introduced in this season. And there are also some classic episodes including, “Perfect Week” and “Jenkins.” It’s a season that focuses more on humor than character development, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
4 Season 4 – 8.3
Ted gets left at the altar, Barney pines for a girl who only sees him as a friend, Robin has a lot of career troubles, Marshall puts his dreams on hold to work at a bank, and it’s discovered that Lily destroys all of Ted’s relationships. Season 4 is not a good one for the lives of the gang, but it’s still fun to watch.
One of the highlights of the season is the eleventh episode titled, “Little Minnesota,” where Marshall takes Robin to a Minnesota-themed bar. It’s a nice episode as the two characters rarely have storylines together, so the whole thing feels unique. And that’s just one of Season 4’s abundance of entertaining episodes.
3 Season 1 – 8.3
How I Met Your Mother gets off to a great start with its first season. It successfully introduces its unique premise while also establishing the characters and their relationships to each other.
Even though the early part of the season spends plenty of time on introductions, it never detracts from the comedy. As evidenced by the third episode, “The Sweet Taste Of Liberty,” which not only tells viewers all they need to know about Barney’s personality, but also provides a lot of laughs. The season also includes other legendary episodes like “The Pineapple Incident,” “Drumroll, Please,” and its brilliant finale, “Come On.”
2 Season 3 – 8.3
From “How I Met Everyone Else” to “The Platinum Rule,” there are multiple episodes in Season 3 that showcase HIMYM’s ability to use different narrative styles while still feeling like the same show. These episodes elevate an already consistently strong third season.
Even the unpopular Ted and Stella relationship provides some good moments, like the two-minute date they go on during “Ten Sessions.” The season also plants the seeds for the Barney and Robin romance. And the pair’s first hook-up leads to an engaging story about Barney and Ted no longer being friends, which has a heartwarming conclusion.
1 Season 2 – 8.5
At it’s best, How I Met Your Mother delivers laugh-out-loud moments and well-written romances. No other season does this better than the second. It contains Barney’s hilarious one-man show and the equally humorous friendship between Marshall and Brad. Although, the funniest episode of the season is “Slap Bet,” which acts as the origin of two of the most beloved running gags in the series: Robin Sparkles and the slaps.
It’s also the most significant season for Marshall and Lily’s relationship. They start broken up but finish as a married couple. Meanwhile, Ted and Robin spend most of the season as an item, before splitting towards the end. Seeing how both relationships play out is what makes the season so compelling.
