How Old Jack Marston Is At The End Of Red Dead Redemption

Jack Marston’s age by Red Dead Redemption’s epilogue is relatively easy to discern, at least if one remembers a key piece of info from RDR2.

The epic storyline of Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2 spans roughly 15 years, focusing in part on Jack Marston, leading many to wonder about his age. Red Dead Redemption’s central character, however, is Jack’s father, John, an outlaw who eventually tries to sever ties with his criminal past in no small part for the sake of his wife, Abigail, and his son. Red Dead Redemption players eventually learn John’s age, thanks to a cutscene and other details. But how old is Jack by the end of things, when he takes up his father’s mantle?
Red Dead Redemption 2 gives players a critical a piece of information, despite being a prequel which concentrates on an associate of John’s in the Van der Linde gang, Arthur Morgan. The plot kicks off in 1899, and it’s established that Jack is roughly 4, having spent some of his formative years with the gang. With that, it’s fairly easy to figure out his age as events progress.
The core events of Red Dead Redemption take place in 1911, making Jack about 16. Towards the ending of the game – or at least, the first ending – John is gunned down on his own farm, having been betrayed by Bureau of Investigation agent Edgar Ross, who previously forced him to track down other members of the Van der Linde crew. The sacrifice does however allow Marston’s wife and son to escape, and they eventually return to bury him, marking his grave with stones and a wooden cross. It’s the latter that identifies John’s birth year as 1873, making him about 38 years old.
Jack’s Age In Red Dead Redemption’s Epilogue
The true end of Red Dead Redemption, however, takes place in 1914, putting Jack’s final age at just 19. Now under the player’s control, he buries his mother and, free from any obligations, decides to hunt down Ross and kill him, even though the agent’s now retired from the Bureau and the murder won’t bring anyone back. In fact, there’s no immediate pressure to do this, and the game will gladly let players roam the towns and countryside as if they were simply replacing John. It’s to the game’s credit that there’s no narrative pressure to avenge the injustice.
There’s no sign at this point Rockstar is working on a Red Dead Redemption 3, or some other spinoff in the Red Dead series. It’s not that the second game wasn’t successful, far from it. It’s simply that flagship Rockstar projects now take many years to develop, and the company is simultaneously running Red Dead Online, meaning that an announcement could still be years away. Either way, the company has boxed itself into a chronological corner, as the Wild West was effectively dead by 1914, with many key characters already gone, perhaps making its best option to recall the founding of the Van der Linde gang or else focus on an entirely new crew of gunslingers.
