How Short Circuit Could Set Up Terminator — Theory Explained

The ending of Short Circuit could have set up the events of The Terminator, according to one fan theory. Released in 1984, The Terminator is considered one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, spawning a franchise that includes multiple sequels and spin-offs that explore a future in which a military-created artificial defense system becomes self-aware and chooses to destroy humanity using advanced robotics and cybernetics. Short Circuit, on the other hand, was released in 1986 and dealt with the concept of free will through the lens of an artificially intelligent military defense robot that gains sentience and learns about the value of life.

While the T-800 was a completely unique creation both in concept and design, the Hunter Killer robots created by Cyberdyne Systems and employed by Skynet in the future of the Terminator franchise look eerily similar to the S.A.I.N.T. robots designed by Nova in Short Circuit. The robot designs sport nearly identical chassis and tank tread, far more than one would expect from two unrelated projects. Even more interesting, the S.A.I.N.T. program’s biggest innovation was the creation of artificial intelligence, one which was shared by Cyberdyne Systems in its creation of Skynet.

According to one Terminator theory (via Reddit), based on the similarities in the chassis between the S.A.I.N.T. robots (including Johnny 5) and the Hunter Killer robots Skynet would eventually develop, the two franchises take place in the same universe. The theory states that it’s possible that when it went under, Nova chose to liquidate its assets, including the research for the S.A.I.N.T. program and the schematics for the robots to rival company Cyberdyne Systems, leading to the eventual rise of Skynet through its creator, Miles Dyson. Since the events of The Terminator happened two years before those of Short Circuit, Miles Dyson was already trying to reverse engineer the arm and processor chip of the original T-800 that pursued Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese. If Nova sold their assets to Cyberdyne, they would also have the blueprints for the S.A.I.N.T. robots, allowing Miles Dyson to reverse engineer both and invent what would eventually become the backbone of Skynet’s military forces.

Most interestingly, the S.A.I.N.T. robots utilize a limited artificial intelligence, much like what Skynet would one day possess and pass on to creations like the Hunter Killer and the robotic villain-slash-hero T-800. That limited artificial intelligence programming allowed Johnny 5 to gain sentience after being struck by lightning and could have been researched and improved upon by Miles Dyson and Cyberdyne Systems so that the next generation of robots were smarter, learned faster, and had the potential to become self-aware.

This artificial intelligence research would prove to be far more valuable than any singular robotic design. With Nova’s blueprint, Cyberdyne Systems could further the research more than anyone would have thought possible, eventually using it to create a military defense system capable of running the entire United States military. This system would then grow and evolve, and becoming self-aware and waging war on John Connor and the human resistance.

It’s possible that all this is purely coincidental and these two universes are unrelated, but based on the timeline of the original films and technological similarities between the robots, it’s hard to deny that there’s at least a potential connection between them. If nothing else, this theory provides an explanation for how Cyberdyne Systems was able to create the Hunter Killer robots (and potentially Skynet itself). The research performed by Nova allowed Miles Dyson to further his own research, creating Skynet in the original timeline, one without the original T-800 that went back to kill Sarah Connor before John could be born. As dark as it is to think about, the same technological advancements that allowed Johnny 5 to become sentient and discover his love for human life in Short Circuit could have laid the groundwork for Skynet to one day wage a war in The Terminator to end it.
