10 Things You Didnt Know About Batmans Tweedledee & Tweedledum

Batman has a huge array of villains but two of the oddest in his rogues gallery are Tweedledum and Tweedledee. The pair are obviously a reference to the Alice In Wonderland novels and look remarkably similar to the characters in the book.

The pair of villains have somehow managed to stand the test of time, despite their wacky nature. They have consistently been a thorn in Batman’s side and have formed numerous partnerships over the years to continue to try to make a fortune from their criminal activity. Despite how long they have been around, there is still plenty that fans don’t actually know about this dangerous duo.

10 Dumfrey & Deever

While they are commonly known as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, that is of course not their real names. Their actual names are Dumfrey and Deever Tweed. The names are perhaps just as quirky as the characters themselves.

While the Tweed name might represent some of their preferred choice of clothing, they came up with the Wonderland based nicknames because they resemble the characters from the books. They also felt their names were also very similar to the fictional duo.

9 They’re Actually Cousins

Despite their similar appearance and same last names the pair aren’t actually twins, as many might have assumed they were. They do have a familial relation though, which does explain their shared likeness, but they are actually cousins.

The Tweed family has been explored a little further across the comics, animated appearances, and even their live-action appearance, but the combination of these two cousins is the most well-known iteration of the deadly dummies.

8 Earth-2

Like so many other characters from the Golden Age of comics, the two cousins weren’t actually originally on Earth-1. They were actually villains on Earth-2, although that doesn’t mean that the latest versions of the characters are any different.

Crisis on Infinite Earths changed a lot of things, but one huge difference was that the cousins were brought onto Earth-1 to continue to be a pain in Batman’s side. They have remained on the prime version of Earth ever since.

7 Crime Bosses

The common assumption of the pair is that they are always henchmen to other quirky villains such as the Mad Hatter or the Joker. But, that couldn’t actually be further from the truth, especially in their earlier days.

Tweedledee and Tweedledum were incredibly successful crime bosses. They had their own henchmen to do their bidding and had a number of wins to their name. They made a lot of money in the business and could have become as big as the Penguin had fate turned out differently.

6 Yonville Mayors

In a strange turn of events in the comics, the two cousins ran to become the Mayors of a small town called Yonville. They gained some political power and managed to use this to their advantage when Batman and Robin came to investigate.

They used their newfound position by arresting the Dark Knight and his sidekick, that is until Batman and Robin broke free and turned the table on these two power-hungry frauds.

5 Joker Partnership

One of the initial team-ups that the pair decided to commit to was when they partnered with the Joker. They had been in and out of Arkham for some time during this period and clearly felt that this was the next best business move for them.

Much like the modern-day Jokers though, Tweedledum and Tweedledee ended up being nothing more than slightly above average henchmen. It’s why they eventually moved on to other partnerships and didn’t pair up much with the Clown Prince of Crime.

4 Man Down

One of the most difficult times in Tweedledee’s life was when his best friend and partner, Tweedledum, was shot and killed. This was during a gang term war in which he was gunned down by another rival.

Deaths usually don’t last in the comic book world but it seems that Tweedledum’s really did stick. After some time had passed on, there were references from the Joker himself that Tweedledee was still a man down, suggesting he was never revived off-page.

3 A Dummer Replacement

It’s difficult to be Tweedledee without having a Tweedledum to work alongside. Luckily there was a solution within the Tweed family that solved this issue and put this Wonderland team back in business.

After Dumfrey’s death, his twin brother managed to step up and fill in his role. His name was Dumson Tweed, which luckily meant his name still fit into the theme of the group. Being the twin of Dumfrey he naturally also looked identical!

2 A Wonderland Surprise

One of the most underrated villainous groups from all of DC Comics is the Wonderland Gang. They’ve had a variety of well-known members over the years from Alice and Mouse in the TV show to the Mad Hatter and Harley Quinn herself.

Tweedledee and Tweedledum were a natural fit for the group but it seemed they were being used as henchmen. It turned out they finally had control of their lives once again and also the team leader Mad Hatter, who they were mind controlling from the shadows.

1 Gotham Tag Team

The TV show Gotham is famous for the wide variety of characters that it has adapted from the comic books onto the small screen. The iconic Tweedledee and Tweedledum, of course, had to be on the list of villains to be explored further and made their live-action debut.

In the TV show, their wider family is portrayed, with the group actually being professional wrestlers. Tweedledee and Tweedledum are manipulated and controlled by the Mad Hatter, which is a departure from their role in the Wonderland Gang in the comics.
