How Superboys Telekinesis Power Works (And Why Its Awesome)

Outside of his every changing backstory, Superboy a.k.a Conner Kent or Kon-El, has been one of DC Comics’ more unique young characters. Nowhere is this truer than in the one ability he does not share with Superman.

For a generation, Superboy’s powers have mirrored those of Superman. While Superman, in his maturity, might develop newer powers that Superboy did not possess, Superman possessed all the powers Superboy manifested. That all changed with the arrival of Project Cadmus’ Superboy during the Reign of the Supermen story arc. On the surface, Cadmus’ Superboy was a duplicate of the Superboy of old. He was strong, powerful, and supremely resistant to physical attacks. However, these powers obscured a major difference between the two Superboy iterations.

The newer Superboy’s powers were not inherently generated by his body. Rather, they were produced by a form of telekinesis. Superboy’s telekinetic powers are the result of a weakness in Project Cadmus’ technical abilities to recreate Superman. While they were able to obtain Superman’s body, they were not able to make a perfect clone, making Superboy imperfect. However, during their cloning attempts, they discovered a special “aura” that surrounded Superman’s body. They were able to recreate that aura and transform it into a telekinetic force field that they used to surround Superboy’s body. Additionally, Cadmus’ modified the force field so that Superboy could unconsciously manipulate with his mind.

While telekinesis commonly manifests in the ability to use one’s mind to manipulate the acts, actions, and conduct of others, Superboy’s telekinetic abilities contain a special subset, that Project Cadmus referred to as tactile telekinesis. Specifically, Superboy can mentally control anything he can physically touch. The most obvious example of this is demonstrated in his ability to fly. Since his mind is connected to his body, he can do anything he can mentally picture himself accomplishing. Similarly, he could dismantle a car by touching it and picture himself dissembling it.

It is the force field, and Superboy’s control over it, that gives him his Superman-like powers. Like Superman’s aura, it protects him from physical attack. He can also lift, throw, punch and kick any object by unconsciously extending the force field around the object, visualizing what he wants to do with the object, and using the force field to actualize his vision. When Superboy punches his way through a wall, it’s not his muscles that are pulverizing the brick and mortar, it’s his mind-activated force field.

The force field, however, only works on things Superboy can physically touch. Unlike Superman, he cannot deflect energy, fire, or gas. Since his powers are not based on Superman’s inherent abilities, Superboy cannot replicate any of his sensory powers such as X-ray vision, super breath, or laser blasts. It nevertheless is a unique offshoot of a superpower that Superman does not possess but gives Superboy the amazingly unique ability to manipulate objects with his mind and hands.
