How Venomized SpiderMan Justifies Killing

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow #2

Things are escalating quite quickly in Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow, as a symbiote-suited Peter Parker has embarked on a villain-killing spree, justified by a symbiote-twisted moral code. Spurred on by the alien symbiote’s total lack of moral decency, the “What If?” miniseries follows a murderous Peter Parker in an alternate reality in which he decided to keep the living black suit after receiving it during the 1985 crossover miniseries Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars. Written in somewhat grim fashion by Chip Zdarsky (with perhaps a nod towards the ‘90s animated Spider-Man series), the result depicts a rage-driven Spider-Man who justifies his brutal killings by coldly declaring it is his responsibility to choose who lives and who dies.

At the heart of Spider’s Shadow, which features art by Pasqual Ferry and colors by Matt Hollingsworth, is a rare depiction of what Spider-Man would be like if he succumbed to the allure of the symbiote costume, which famously was revealed to be an amoral alien. Eventually moving on to bond with Eddie Brock to become the villain-turned-hero Venom, the symbiote has a checkered past when it comes to administering lethal force. More well-known portrayals of Peter’s brief possession by the symbiote include the aforementioned ‘90s cartoon as well as Sam Raimi’s 2007 film Spider-Man 3, both of which include a period of building aggression in Peter followed by a struggle between his good instincts and his evil ones, ending in his rejection of the suit. This series, however, shows what happens if the dark side wins, and it’s not pretty, resulting in the murder of Hobgoblin at Spider-Man’s hands.

Spider’s Shadow #2 reveals how the normally ethical Parker justifies his new homicidal tendencies, presenting a disturbing parallel to the original characterization of Venom. As the symbiote psychically winds its way through Peter’s mind, Parker comes to the conclusion that allowing the justice system to imprison his villains has only led to more death when they are inevitably released. If it is his responsibility to “keep people safe,” then it is his responsibility to decide when his villains forfeit their right to live. As he explains to girlfriend Mary Jane when she confronts him about his crimes at his apartment: “It’s all… it’s decisions, MJ. Life is decisions, and they’re… they’re not for everyone. But I have the power to make them, which means… I’m finally making them.”

An issue with Parker’s characterization since his origins, where his unbearable grief following his failure to stop the thief who would murder his Uncle Ben motivated him to fight crime, is that he possesses a few tendencies associated with the classic “Messiah Complex”, a psychological condition in which he believes he is the only person capable of “saving” people, and thus prone to interfering in the lives of others due to this self-appointed role. What Zdarsky seems to be implying in this current series is that, with a hint more aggression (here provided by the symbiote), Peter would quickly descend into monstrousness due to his ability to justify taking extra-legal steps to himself as part of his responsibilities. The symbiote, likewise, assists in pushing Peter to this limit, commenting that “humans won’t understand” these killings because “they live in fear of their choices.”
