John Wick 3 Director Has Ideas For More Sequels

John Wick 3 director Chad Stahelski reveals he and star Keanu Reeves have plenty of ideas for more sequels in the popular action franchise. The John Wick property began life in 2014 and proved to be an ideal comeback vehicle for Reeves. Thanks to the film’s jaw-dropping set pieces and impressive world-building, audiences wanted to see more, and Stahelski was happy to oblige. John Wick: Chapter 2 came out last year and was an even bigger hit at the box office (grossing $171.5 million worldwide). That, combined with the sequel’s cliffhanger ending, meant a third film would be in order.

Chapter 3 (which apparently goes by the name Parabellum) is set for release next summer and is poised to be the conclusion for this unlikely action trilogy. Back in 2017, Stahelski seemed to confirm as much by saying the film would “be a nice completion to Mr. Wick’s journey” after exploring more of John’s interesting backstory and what he wants to do with his life moving forward. However, it appears in the time since those comments, Stahelski changed his mind and would be up for more adventures with the former hitman.

Speaking with EW, Stahelski teased there could be more John Wick movies in the future, particularly if Chapter 3 is a smash success like its two predecessors:

“I enjoy making these movies because there’s no limit. We create our own mythology, and we have a studio that both stays out of our way and supports us on the wacky decisions. If people go see the movie, and it makes money, and they came back to us, Keanu and I have ideas for days. I could live here for the rest of my career. If people like it and want to watch more, I could think of way worse ways to spend your career. But, you know, we’re in the entertainment business. We’ll let the audience figure that out.”

Though Chapter 3 is coming out in the very competitive month of May (where it will be dealing with high-profile films like Detective Pikachu, Aladdin, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters), it should be in good shape, commercially speaking. The John Wick movies sport low production budgets (Chapter 2 was made for $40 million), so they don’t need to break the bank in order to turn a profit for the studio. Additionally, the series has garnered a passionate fan base over the last few years, and many people are excited to see Reeves return to one of his signature roles. Plus, with Chapter 3 undoubtedly rated R, it will be targeting a different demographic when compared to the usual summer tentpoles – improving its box office prospects.

John Wick 3 should earn enough money to warrant another followup, but it remains to be seen if the creative team should move forward with one. That all depends on what transpires in this next installment and if there are any interesting threads left dangling that need to be resolved. It’s true that the underground criminal world Stahelski crafted is truly fascinating and ripe for additional content (like the Continental television series), but it would be a shame if John Wick’s reputation was tarnished by an underwhelming entry that didn’t add much to the mythos. Fortunately, Stahelski and Reeves are no doubt aware of that, and if there’s ever a John Wick 4, it’ll be because there’s a solid narrative in place.
